Having the correct ring end gap will not make the engine short lived but if the ring gap is large you will lose compression that is lost power

If you a filing rings, just file one end.Much easier to keep the end gap square, then lightly file the corners where you filed to break the sharp edges.I have seen where the ring gap was not enough, the ring will stop in the cylinder but the piston keeps going down and it pulls the top ring land off the piston

Actually what happens when the gap is too tight is the heat in the ring expands it.The ends meet, the ring cups and shoves the top land off.Rough cylinder finishes cause friction in ring to cylinder contact. That makes more heat in the ring and creates another problem area. motorguy  >:D

Sorry to hijack this post but I do have a quick question(s). On my oppy I want to use the stock piston and just hone the cylinders. Can I use OS ring on standard pistons with just a hone job? There is a extremely small ledge on top of the cylinders that my finger nail just catches that will clean up when honed or should I just stick with standard ring size? Sorry again for hijacking

If you put oversize rings in you will have to file fit them

Yeah I understand that part but I didn't know if OS rings would help since I'm not boring it out just honing. Even standard new rings needs filed just didn't know if OS would benefit my engine

If you have that much ridge at the top of the cylinder it needs to be bored and have an oversize piston, then you can file fit the rings

OK I will look into getting it bored. It only feels like .005 lip that way I asked. I wish I can find my machinist gauges so I can check the real wear on it. It didn't smoke or burn oil but the exhaust valve seems like the guide has a little too much play so I'm going to order new valves and exhaust guides. Just didn't want to get new pistons  :dunno:

OK I just measured the cylinders. Top cylinder show standard at 3.435 and below the ledge is 3.427. The bottom shows standard size is the same at 3.435 and below the ledge is 3.425 so one is .008 wear and the other is .010 wear

Let me ask you this.... how does it get smaller, under the ridge?
Are you using the same tool for both measurements?
The wear should be under the ridge. That number should get bigger
than the one above the ridge.
