i might be reading this wrong but if you are gonna run a horizontal engine you wouldnt need a RAGB? Just a jackshaft. I don't personally run one but I know of some people that have both so that when they are under caution they can pull the manual clutch and burp the throttle to keep the motor from loading up.

You need to run a buller or bully, same thing, set rpm to engage where ever. They make them for the 1 1/8" shaft.

Can't remember if Tom's engine is 1" or 1-1/8".....I thought it was 1".
Guess Hebb and I will be building a couple of these together......but mine will have a slight ...."Twist" to it.
Shhhh.!...Quiet Tom!!! - not one word!....I'll be home all weekend if you want to get started.

Lots of guys also use the Noram Star clutches if you have a 1" crankshaft. If you plan on building a lot of HP you'll want to go with the Bully clutch. You can call them directly and get one.

Can these be used in both vertical and horizontal positions?
Our plans were to use a vertical crankshaft orientation.

I aint so sure I would hang a high dollar disk clutch under a mower in the dirt, I use a star on the vertical setups and they work well. I have had no issues with them at all. and I aint lacking hp or torque for that matter. sure a disk clutch is better but thats alot of money to experiment with to see if they can take the abuse of being under there in those conditions.

I wouldn't put a disc clutch under there either, they wouldn't be able to handle being subjected to that much dirt for too long. The star clutch would be the best choice on a vertical.

 You can't get a star clutch for a 1 1/8" shaft.

Thats where you either change the crank OR cut it down but then it would have to be rehardened.

Which is better for a horizontal?  I was looking at the Bulley clutches, kind of pricey but look like a nice set-up

Well the noram star clutches are rated at 15-20hp from the factory. However they still work really well and handle much more than that. They have a pretty smooth engagement, and are usually pretty reliable.  But they won't handle really big HP for long without slipping. The bully clutch is designed to handle more hp and has a much harder more instant engagement. Both can be made to work, and it all depends on gearing and how much power you are making. The best deal is the star clutch is a third of the price of a bully
