How To: Make Your Own Leakdown Tester
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:07:26 pm »
For Cheap! I wasn't about to go spend $75+ on a leakdown tester, I could have made it for cheaper but I got all the parts at my local hardware store because I was lazy and didn't want to drive 30+ minutes to a town that actually has stores open  Only spent $38 on it though, which isn't too bad.

You'll need the above goodies. The hose is a regular grease gun hose.

Step one, remove them from the packages!

After step 1 you should have this pile of fun stuff.

Very first real step, put some nice teflon tape on the threads.

Assemble the regulator like so.

Assemble the 1/8" to 1/4" adapter.

You should then have this.

Congradulations! You now have your very own leakdown tester!

I actually didn't expect such great feedback on it since It was pretty vague... I can edit it so it's more specific & have a list of all the parts needed.

a parts list would probably really help if/when someone went to build one.

Yeah I think a parts list would be good to have.  Hard to tell the sizes of the fittings etc by the photos.

I read somewhere that an orfice (.030)is needed. Did you put one in or just run without it? I built one and put the orface in at the recomended size and it doesn't get enough air to do squat. I am just wondering   I have thought about just running it at 100 psi all the way to the cylinder but wanted to ask first   Thanks  johnboy

Wow I completely forgot about this... I'll have to find my receipts and type out a parts list. I never heard anyware about running an orifice, so no.. Mine did not have one.

Austin - It's covered in the briggs repair manual, along with most automotive repair manuals :)

well, i've never looked in a small engine manual in my life! everything that i know about small engines i either learned from my dad or just from having the experience of growing up around lawnmowers and small engines. now that i think about it, the farthest i've ever taken a small engine apart is just taking the carb and head off!

You should really get a repair manual on CD then, just get an old junky laptop off ebay for like $15 and the cd for another $15 or so, and you got yourself a nice portable shop manual!
