sprocket question
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:38:42 am »
I ran in a race last weekend and i just dont think I have the right setup yet.  I have a JD STX38, 12.5hp, running 6 in on Engine, 4 in on 700, 12 sprocket on trans and 46 on axle, I had pretty good distance speed, but lacking acceleration.  Thinking of jumping to a 14 sprocket on trans?

any help would be appreciated, thx

That'll make acceleration worse. Go to more teeth on the axle. I.e.- 48/50.

Also, governed? Built motor?

Yep, exactly what Burton said...and how long was the track you were on? I carry a 12,13, and 14 for the tranny and 44,46,48,50 for my rears and have never had to go without the right combo

do a search for a gear chart or go on ec and use the speed calculator.

18 inch rear tires?
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

The larger the tire, the more teeth you will have to have on the rear to pick up rpm's faster.  Is there any room for a larger front pulley? The EC speed calculator is a useful tool if you know your rpm's, pulley and gear sizes.

I would recommend 16's or even smaller if you are allowed to.

i could maybe put a 7 in pulley on, but it would be close.

I will check out the speed calc, i actually think I have a set of 16's on my spare transaxle.  I will have to check it out tonight.

With your motor set up, a 6 inch pulley on the motor is fine in my experience...I would say like the others, go to a 16 inch rear tire on 8 inch wheels and I bet your gearing would be pretty close!
