Mowinmachine's build
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:19:21 am »
This is my first racing mower. First of all, I'll be honest and say that I'm just now starting to learn about how this stuff works, so my project will probably be full of errors. Being in California, there hasn't been any chapters or races in this state. Me and a few other people are meeting up this weekend to discuss things and hopefully get a chapter or group started. So in the meantime, I am starting my build. I do not have a welder so at the moment my mower is barely modified. I am still researching parts, builds ( from you guys!) and info on how to do it. This last weekend I spent the entire time tearing my machine down and seeing what kind of shape everything was in.

After removing the sheet metal, I could see that the entire mower was rusted to bits. It looked like some of the bolts were rusted to the frame. Lots of heavy pitting. So that meant spending hours with a grinder and breaker bar, and hammer getting the thing apart. Everything was stuck together BAD. It took 2 hours to get the pulley off the engine. The pulley on the tranny was also stuck. The steering was frozen up. Since I am still looking at steering options, I am going to use the stock until I get that sorted out. ( I know... bad idea) I took all the steering components apart, sanded all the rust off, repacked them, installed new bolts in the linkage bits, and as a minumal safety requirement, bolted 2 1/2" bolts all the way through the front axle and frame. That will hold it for now.

Next thing I wanted to do was inspect the engine and tranny. The tranny is one of those crappy Foote 5 speeds and since this mower is over 20 years old, I figured I aught to at least change the grease. I plan on using this tranny until I can get a better one, like a peerless. Anyhow, this was one of those little projects that I thought would take 30 minutes but took ALL DAY. First of all, I don't think these are intended to ever be taken apart. They are glued together with rubber cement, so once all the bolts came out, it would not come apart short of beating it to death. So I used a trick grandpa taught me- pour boiling water on it! That loosened up the glue just enough so that I could slowly pry screwdrivers all around until it came apart.
I took the cover off and some ball bearings fell into the grease! took me 30 minutes to find them and once I did, I had no idea where they went. The model number was faded and when I looked up foote trannys online, there was literally  200 different models. So I guessed they went on top of 2 springs. That was correct luckily.
Next I had to get all that old, hard grease outta' there. I thought about calling up Mike Rowe from 'Dirty Jobs' because this was NASTY business. It took an hour to get all that goop out of there. I then filled it with Hi-temp synthetic grease. It was bright red,so when done, it looked like I had ground a rabbit up in there. Ummmmmm!
Then when I put it back together, 3 of the holes stripped out, which meant retapping and finding bolts  that would fit. Anyhow, got it back on the mower. This tranny seems overly complicated. We'll see how much it will take out on the track before it blows. Next time I think about changing the grease, I'll just buy a used tranny somewhere else. Lesson learned!

Next up was the engine. It was running when I got it, but the 2nd time I started it, it ran like crap. So I figured it was the carb, which was correct. The gas tank was full of crud, water, and some other weird oily substance. So I removed the carb, and cleaned it all out. She started up and runs great now. While I was at it, I gave it a purty' paint job.
I went online and ordered up a 5/5/8" iron pulley for the engine and a 6" rear. The tranny came with a whopper 10" pulley, so this 6" aught to give me a 9:1 ratio. I could be wrong. I also ordered 2 tensioners, one to replace the old original and one to add another for the extra slack in the belt since the belt on this mower is very long and I'm afraid will do a lot of slipping once the extra torque is there.
With everything closed for the holidays, I decided to do some painting since it wasn't raining. I had a lot of cheap camoflauge paint sitting around along with some 99 cent black spray paint, So I painted the frame, sheet metal, and other stuff. Even my wife got in on it and did this design on the hood. She even picked out the name.

Well looks like things are coming along nicely. So hope fully you can get your race chapter and go out racing.

Me too. If not, then I've got a big worthless riding mower that'll do 30MPH sitting in the garage!

Hey, did you know if you turn the front axle around it will steer much better in the turns?     KEVIN

looks pretty good, you really REALLY want to upgrade your steering, front end, and brakes!! you dont wanna be running 30 around a track and not be able to steer, or get some front end wobble, or worst yet, not be able to stop if someone cuts in front of you!!

love the paint, and the bomber girl :P

Or have this happen (up on a mountain about 2 miles away from home)!

I agree. I had some questions though: I've been looking into how it is done, and if I am not mistaken, it looks like you weld a straight bar across the frame ( in mine there is a slot cut out about 3" back),install a direct steering mechanism along with spindles on the end of the front axle, cut out some holes in the back to install the rear axle cassettes. It looks like the rear axles come with a keyway cut almost the entire length? Then you slide on 2 disc brakes and clamp them on via end caps with hex screws? Also looks like most people are going with a chain drive attached to a peerless tranny. This is just what I've observed from pictures and stuff here. Is that about right?

I'm a long way off from that since A: I have no welder B: haven't welded in years, and C: don't have the parts to do it (yet). But I intend to have it together surely by this summer. In the meantime, I'm going to take it easy and have fun with it. My brother is bringing my old motorcycle helmet and gloves when he moves out here next week.
