Avatars
« on: December 28, 2006, 04:59:01 pm »
Over the last few days I've run across several avatars on the forum that were being called from the full size image on Photobucket. The forum software was set to resize these images, so they look like any other avatar when loaded. Being a web designer however, I notice things that others may not notice, and I know what causes many problems when I see them on a web page. When I load a page and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find an avatar still loading, it's pretty much a dead giveaway that image's file size is huge!!

After finding the first, and determining it was 287 kb, which avatars are supposed to run down around 5 kb max, if you want the page to load efficiently, I've been checking a great many of them and cutting new avatars for you behind the scenes. I've also discovered several that the images were resized to proper dimensions but no file compression was used on the image, and those have been running in the 10 - 15 kb range. Likewise I have resized several of those.

If your avatar disappeared on you mysteriously it is likely because we changed settings in the back room to reject large file sizes on avatars, rather than simply resize their dimensions. If you need help with resizing your image, post it here and I'll cut you a new one in proper dimensions and file size.

Sorry about the trouble guys, but when we get several of these huge files on a page, it slows page load speed drastically for those on dial-up, and we want their experience here to be as enjoyable as everyone else's. Especially since two of our Admin members have to endure this as well!!

Yep!! Not a problem.

-------------------

In chatting with Chris about this in the backroom guys, it seems SMF won't waste your existing avatar if it is too large, so it won't disappear! If all of you would be so kind as too right click on your avatar, scroll down and select properties and check file size for us we would greatly appreciate it!! Should be below 7000 bytes, if it's not please report it here...

If I designed your avatar for you, you don't have to worry.

I have fixed several in the last few days, but given the numbers I haven't notified everyone, and honestly I don't remember them all...

Brian Singsime, Robert Sparbell, Kyle McGee, Money89tractors, 1031, SCF I got yours already! There were several more but I don't recall all of the names guys.

lmao you guys are too much.

Rocky, thanks for fixin my avatar, i was in the process of doin it and then read this.

-Phil
..."I used that motto to keep going, keep pushing, keep digging to
find a way around, or through to find a hole, some kind of break that
would allow some space. Once something broke thru, I could be there to
take advantage. Then I would finish 7th instead of 10th." - Dubba G

Rocky,
Mine is to big 12000.  I don't know how to change it.  If you can fix it, go ahead.  Or let me know what I need to do.
Thanks
Paul

You're fixed Paul! Since it's so purty I cranked up quality on it, brought you in just under 5 kb from the original 12.5. It lost a little definition down at the 2.5 kb range! Flames on the hood were a bit fuzzy.
