FB460V Lives!
« on: May 14, 2012, 12:31:11 am »
Well we fired it up! Not quite as smooth as I was hoping but better than any Briggs I've seen with just ARC weights bolted. Decent throttle response. This was initial engine start without any tuning running on a tool caddy. I'm pretty excited to get some stand time on it and get it to the track for some tuning.

Sounds great!

What flywheel are you using? We used the ARC & also used the ARC Crank weights weights (Briggs) & HD Valve Springs. Seems to work fine.

The only problem we have had so far is the stock Mikuni runs out of fuel. There have been some previous suggestions to drill the jets out........just a little "Skeerd"....the jets are NLA, so if you mess one up, you have to buy a whole new carb.
I would like to try to fit a FC540V 17hp Carb on it but the intake bolts are much larger. I would have to get real creative modifying the intake, and making a filter adaptor.

For initial fire up I just bolted a Walbro LMT 56 on it. I seen the 540 carb wasn't anywhere's near a direct fitment. My 2 540's don't have an intake they bolt direct to the head. I'm going to work on the stock carb once I get the engine broke in. This has an ARC flywheel and is balanced with steel weights I made. I ned to start the work on the 540 but I'm waiting on parts (piston, rings and pin). I bored both .25mm over.

Same here, we used the Walboro for testing & Yep, the 540 was way too big,....but if I can get some sort of adaptor machined up, we may try that too.

U da man.
I think I may have one in my parts box...also let me check the clearance, that 17 mikuni is quite a bit wider.
Can you make a filter adaptor too?
Will take some measurements tonite G-man.

What's the difference in the fc420 carb and the fb460 and the fc540

420 is the smaller of the three(420cc), 540 is much larger

Well put a few easy laps on it tonight. I've got to say I'm surprised by the low end this thing has with the cam it has in it. A very radical grind from Isky and when the cam hits HOLD ON! idle is smooth and no where near as lopey as would have thought. Vibration( whole lot less than a Harley Davidson LOL) comes in just off idle and disappears almost completely by 2800 rpm. By 5000 smooth - real smooth. I'm not sure if this is typical of a single with no counterbalance but I can live with it.
