I am pretty sure the brown jet part number is 640040. I could be wrong though.

Is .007 the "brown" one?

Does anyone know if it's possible to mount the carb directly to the block? Do I need an adapter? Who has one?

Lots of questions.
Thanks for the help thusfar.

.007?? Where did you get that from?? The brown jet is .040 and brown in color...carb straight to the head, why? It makes no sense why you would wanna do that if the motor is all stock.

Yea, I don't know what I was thinking.
I was searching the part numbers. I copied the weight of it instead of size.

I was thinking about putting a k&n airfilter on it. I could make a tapered air filter adapter instead though.

EC sells an adapter to fit the carb that lets you slide a cone filter right on it.

Hey Yall,
I have to buy a complete bowl kit. Heres the question.

Mine has a blue plastic emulsion tube.

Some of the kits have the same blue plastic emulsion tube. Others have a brass one.

Which one is better? What should I buy?

I run a stock OHV490 / 17HP TEC. in the ARMA MOD XR class...The emulsion tube and jet of choice is, as suggested, "blue tube / brown .040 jet"
MOD XR is a governed class @ 3650 rpm, a factory stock engine with jetting, velocity stack / aircleaners and custom header pipes.
E.C. does have a nice velocity stack / air cleaner adapter for these carbs. However if your running the stock governer and/or throttle linkage, you may need to lathe 15-17 degrees taper/angle off the intake where it mounts to the head...this will allow enough clearance for your filter to fit well and not bind up or rub against your linkages.
How far and fast you want to go, you may want to open the brown jet a little, and the brass one in the bottom of the bowl, depending how your header likes it
Don't forget there's spring with the jet AND the emulsion tube, and they do sell a screw to replace that solenoid. Also worth noting is how bad the Ethonol is eating up the O-rings....These are great carbs, but can be tempermental.

I believe you Mr Herrin.
...
Ok. I found the difference.

Here is a "factory" rebuild kit part# 730639 with the blue plastic tube.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TECUMSEH-CARB-BOWL-KIT-PART-730639-/270577534021

This kit is labeled as a "replacement" part 730639 rebuild kit. But this one has a brass tube.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Float-Bowl-Repair-Kit-Assembly-Tecumseh-730639 -/110715543027

Which one should I get? I bought the brown .040 jet.
My engine is stock w/ open exhaust. No governor.  I plan on putting on a high flow air intake. I won't be going any further than that.

Thanks,
Joshua

The blue emulsion tube will be plenty. I would simply buy the kit to replace what you have already.

OK, I had some time to look it over closely with the parts diagram in front of me.

I tallied up the missing parts at partstree.com
Shipping is another $7

There are 6 items in your cart for a total of $36.01
TEC 632547

   $10.40 / qty 4

TEC 632545
Spring, Main Nozzle Tube
   $1.53 / qty 1

TEC 36918
Spring
   $2.08 / qty 1

TEC 27110A
Bowl Drain Washer
   $2.10 / qty 1

TEC 640041
Bowl Drain Screw
   $2.18 / qty 1

TEC 640039B
Float Bowl Assembly
   $17.72 / qty 1

So, instead of spending $44 to rebuild my old carb, a new emissions carb on ebay is $44 shipped.
I wont be rebuilding.

Should I buy the a new carb exactly like the old one, or is there a fully adjustable carb that is bolt on? Like a pre-emissions version or another brand?

Thanks,
Joshua

Your pretty much "stuck" with a replacement. There is no fully adjustable carb, nor have I ever saw one of these with an adjustable main jet. Not to say it couldn't be done as I'm sure with enuff time money and resource it could be. But replacing what you have will be fine, if you need more fuel open the jets up

Do NOT buy the emmision carb. A brand new 7 series carb may still be around $130. That is the way to goi.

Bert
Gary Busey and Rick James both used to live in my shop. Redline stole them.

I would like to have the brass tube just to compare it to a blue one.

I don't follow. I thought the series 7 is an emissions carb? They can be had on eBay brand new for $45. Both the original w/ blue plastic emulsion tube or Oregon replacement with a brass emulsion tube.

One more question
If I want to try the brass tubed version from Oregon, like Mr Herrin suggested, are Oregon replacement carbs of good quality?
