Carb - Rebuild or Replace?
« on: March 27, 2012, 09:42:02 am »
Hello,

I have an OHV17 204606B with a series 7 carb 640072

After pulling my mower out, I noticed my float bowl had a chunk of plastic broke out of it where the fuel solenoid mounts. I took the bowl off and epoxied the chunk back in just to get it started for the year.

It started right up, however, it wouldnt run over 1/3 throttle and was spraying fuel out my hood stack pipe. Upon removing the air filter, there was fuel in the bottom of the air intake. So I figured it was a stuck float. Upon removal, however, the float works good and can shut off flow. I need to see if the float is cracked and is filling up with fuel. Anyway, I want to replace the float bowl assembly 730639.
BUT, Ive found two kinds of replacement kits. One has a brass emulsion tube. Another has the plastic blue emulsion tube. Mine has the blue plastic emulsion tube.

Which one should I use? Blue plastic or brass?
Or should I just forget this carb and replace it with another one that is a bolt on replacement, like an older non emissions carb?

Thanks guys, this forum is so helpful!

There is a blue emulsion tube in it now. How do I get the jet out to see? It looks like it's press fitted into the plastic fuel bowl.

That brass jet is fixed. It does not come out. The main jet is behind the shut off solenoid/bowl drain nut.

That's the lowside jet. The main jet is down in the hole where you took that fuel solenoid out of.

Your too slow, once again.....

You should be fine with the 730639 bowl at any rate. If anything, swap your existing main jet into it if a different color from the new bowl.

My build would fit into the "other builds, interesting projects" category. Here is the before and after pics. It is called Sodzilla. A hood stack means the exhaust exits through the hood, most commonly found on diesels, my favorite engines.

After

It even blows smoke, as every monster should. It can blow enough smoke to cloud up  In this pic the smoke had almost cleared already.

I'll pull the jet and see. I need to do a spark plug test.

That's what I thought...
If it is spraying fuel out of the exhaust, I am surprised it runs at all.

Maybe every monster should smoke like that...but no gas engine should, that thing needs rings dude!

Um, thanks for your help, but the rings are fine. I should have said I  MAKE it smoke intentionally on demand.  I have a windshield wiper pump that injects a baby oil and diesel fuel mix through a copper tube prewarmer that's wrapped around the header, and then into the base of the header. Its a simple smoke setup based off of my rc planes that can have smoke systems for sky writing and aerobatics.

I think I might have found the problem. When the fuel solenoid broke off, I think the main jet may have fell out. Is the jet gone, how is the jet behind the solonoid held in?

The jet is held in by the solenoid and a spring. If the solenoid fell out, chances are the jet is gone.

Man you all are quick.

I was afraid so. I'm surprised it ran at all.  I didn't have a chance to pull the plug after putting on the straight pipe. I have heard the stock jets on these engines run lean, especially with a straight pipe. Since I have to buy a jet, which one should I buy?

Other than the exhaust, it's stock? Mine is pretty much stock, but something tells me mine requires more fuel than yours...
I would guess either a brown or black jet should work. I have seen both in these engines. The brown is larger than the black, f.y.i.

Except for the exhaust it's bone stock. Do you have a link to the brown one?
