Transmission
« Reply #3 on: December 12, 2005, 05:22:45 pm »
I see you put the transmission right on top of the frame, right out in the open.  I've been wondering how the be devil I was going to put the transmission in mine.  How is that working out for you?

Anyone else have comments on this open location?

Oh come on man. You got no lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, or crap flappers?
No, I don't.
You're gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

I like the look of it, and it probably sticks to the ground pretty well since you're almost riding on the frame rails

Red Horse, i put the tranny on top of the frame because there really isnt anywhere else to put it, as im sure u already know these little tractors dont have really any extra room once youve put it together. the big thing here is if you mount it there make sure u strengthen that part of the frame up quite a bit. i made that mistake and the end result was a bent frame where the tranny sat. other than that having the tranny sit right there is not a bad setup, it makes it easy to get to and a less complicated shifter setup compared to other setups. the only thing is make a cover or something for it incase it desides to grenade, cause if it does u might not have the ability to make kids anymore LoL. Let me know how the build up of youre tractors are goin it nice to ses that there are other people out there turnin the old wheelhorses into racers. thanx everyone for all the comments

Question for tech
« Reply #7 on: December 13, 2005, 04:15:09 pm »
Thanks for the heads up on the frame bracing.  I've read somewhere here about a transimission plate that ought to help out there.  Now, all I have to do is search it out......

One question I have for a tech is, since this is the only place available to mount the transmission, would putting a shroud over it be legal?  It would definately be safer, but with all the hub bub about correct sheet metal for the tractor in question, would special built shrouding be legal?  SP class.

You gotta be safe, and safety is number one, but if you're disqualified for improper sheet metal, you still don't race.

What I'm worried about here is something akin to motorcycle oval tracks.  Any time an engine came along that beat the V-twins every time, the newcomer was outlawed, thus insuring V-twin dominance.  In other words, race a Harley.  Ditto with the garden tractor pullers, some rules are written to favor the Cubs, thus they dominate.  What about the guy who has a different brand preference?  You can win, but you're doing it against the odds.

No matter, it's Wheel Horse all the way for me.  I'm brand loyal on this one.

Good question, and I can check it out for you if anyone protests, but..

Rules state that "All expose Chains and Sprockets must fitted with metal guards, which will deflect the chain downward..."

So you should already have a metal guard on there...if that guard happens to extend over the tranny as well to protect from "explosions", that shouldn't be a problem..and appreciated as a "safety issue" rather than a performance enhancement...

If it turns into some "Awkward Hump" that may be seen as an attempt to double your frame strength, in a non-"discrete" way, it would be questioned...

On the tranny plate, George can hook you up with one thru EC Distributing...

Thanks Squidd.  While I realize it's impossible to make a ruling on what isn't even done, having input ahead of time will effect how it's done.

My vision was a substantial chain guard, over and beside, after all that chain is darn close to some important parts.  Over that, a simple "hump" like you say, attached well enough to hold itself on, but easily removable for access to the tranny.  In other words, obviously to me at least, not structural.

Thanks also on the link!!!  I was thinking it was George, but you know, sometimes when I get to thinking........

I cannot speak for what the present US tech team will say about the placement of the tranny on the mower. What I would do is besure it had a GOOD chain gaurd and not add any additional sheet metal. As the picture above looks I feel it would pass as it sits, Transmission wise anyhow. Biggest thing is be sure all exposed chain is covered. As for tranny plate we can fix you up on that for sure. When you call us at E.C. Distributing, 615-446-6807 we will need to know how wide your chassis is.

i got a question. since were not aloud to have any kind of suspension would we atleast be able to put like a spring type setup under the seat to help absorb some of the rough stuff? kinda like a setup found on most stock mowers just without the ability to tip it forward.

As long as it's a lawn mower seat and not lower than the top of the fenders...sure...

But, you may want to consider center of gravity and ride height when choosing a spring...

if you use the original setup for the mower in question sure but keep in mind a springy seat will eject you quicker on a rough track especially as fast as we running.
