So, Lester, since this is experimental Billet flywheel number one for the FC540v, what do you think you have invested so far?
(if you feel that's an inappropriate question, PM me)

I'm using an ARC flywheel 6611 (standard fair for almost everything) that was originally for an Intek twin, no additional cost, just time. I bored out the center of the hub and made a bushing that I machined to match the crankshaft taper then pressed and welded it in. The keyway is in the same location as a 460 so I used the ARC 460 hub as a guide to broach the new keyway. I so desperately wanted to get the 540 running stock with the flywheel before I had to tear it down but unfortunately I'm running out of time. I will need to make a bracket (or modify an Intek one) for the coil. Those that know me know I do things as inexpensively (cheaply LOL) as possible.

What type of spark plugs are you using in your 540?

Already taken care of. Same bronze we used in bushing SBC rods.

Well this was set on the back burner as I waited for parts. It should be up and running soon with a 460 piston, Isky cam, and internally balanced crank. The weights needed were less than the 460 I think in part due to it's massive crank. I removed a lot of weight from the crank on the pin side and the counter balancers are hefty. I guesstimated the size of the weights I would need and overshot plenty. Several hours using a grinder later it is closer. A little fine tuning and should be alright. Still need to port the head. I'm using the valve springs and locks/retainers from a 15 hp Kohler OHV and chrome moly pushrods. Will need to build a adapter for the coil. Should be running by weekend.

Simply put....it's an animal. the cam is extreme but seems to work well. At mid track it feels like someone snuck an extra cylinder on it(at least compared to my 28 briggs flatty)! LOL

The 460 and 540 pistons are the same diameter so more than likely you would have to find a piston with a lot higher pin height to use the 540 rod
There's somethin' in the works...

Rod journal on 540 much larger than the 460. The 460 piston is .102" taller compression height than the 460. I machined .090" from the outer .250" in the lathe, .045" the next .800" and left the center making a stepped domed piston that extends out of the bore .065". The head has been machined for clearance of the middle step. Going to assemble the short block today and maybe whole engine if I finish the porting today.

IT'S ALIVE!!!! Oh my god!!! The thing cranks like it's hydro-locked. Cannot open the throttle while cranking. Started it on the same stand as the 460. Couldn't film it as it took 2 guys to hold the stand from moving. The carb isn't quite legit which might be helping a bit. Throttle response is almost crazy. I will attempt to get a video soon.
