front wheels: hubs vs. bearings
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:48:15 pm »
this is my first build so i'm not going to go too crazy at first.  there will be plenty of time to upgrade.  I was thinking of getting 5/8 spindles and running some 6x6 wheels with high speed bearings instead of 4x4 bolt pattern wheels and hubs.  is this acceptable?

Most people run 5/8" spindles with 6" wheels, should work fine for ya.

is that with hubs or just bearing on the spindle?

If you plan to have an ungoverned engine I would highly recommend using hubs and use kart wheels. The 3 bolt american wheels. Even using high speed bearings in the wheels isnt a good idea. Its not the bearings its the wheels that would be the weak link. I saw a nasty wreck last year from running stock wheels. If you do have your mind made to run the stock wheels at least put some bracing on the inner side of the wheel that faces the mower frame.

but now that brings up another question.  I was looking at some new 6x6 wheels with 5/8 high speed bearings with equal offset inside and outside, as in the bearings are evenly spaced in regards to the center of the wheel.  would this still need bracing like you were talking about.

you will not have fun running anything other then kart hubs. Take it from me i was replacing bearings or wheels every race and most times both until last year we just put kart hubs on everything and only went through one bearing all year.

Yep even with the bearings evenly spaced the wheels just cant take the beating. I know the wheels and hubs cost more but much cheaper than a doctor bill. Not to mention time away from work after a wreck if you get seriously hurt.

You could probably run the aluminum wheels and 3 bolt hubs for around $80 if you shop it out...and not have any troubles. However as mentioned earlier, I have a buddy locally that ran the mower wheels with bearings because he had them. But literally every race day it would destroy 2 or 3 bearings. That adds up after a seasons worth of bearing buying, and that's if ya get lucky and don't tear up a wheel or so in the process.

ive been runnin stock 6 inch mower wheels on the front of my s/p for three years. i only have to replace bearings once a year. i dnt like this setup as well i just havnt gotten around to spent the money on that part of the mower to get aluminum hubs and wheels for the front. just sayin it can be done.

YES AND THEY WONT CARRY THE SIDE LOAD. YOU WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THEM EVERY 2 RACES.
