Why?
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:47:10 pm »
I am starting to build a mowchine. I have aquired a few mowers. However the 2 I have that use the 12hp flatty, have thrown rods and holed the cases.
The 2 I have with 11hp flatty's run fine.
What is the cause of the rod failure on the 28ci?
TIA
Steve

LACK OF OIL OR OVER SPEEDING.

Well I admit I have a lot to learn, but how do you overspeed a governed engine?

Governor could be out of adjustment or the governor itself could have been improperly adjusted allowing the engine to over rev.

Well I didn't know the governor was adjustable, I havent looked close at one at.
How much more rpm's than the stock 3650 can these engines take?

DEPENDS ON THE ENGINE. IVE SEEN SOME KAWASAKIS RUN 4000 FOR 2000 HOURS BEFORE DAMAGE WAS DONE. MOST OF THE TIME IT IS LACK OF LUBRICATION. RAN LOW ON OIL OR NO OIL.

whats the advantage of the brass syncro weights?

I havent narrowed a class yet, just want to build something for club level fun. I would like to run ungoverned but am thinking the cost might be to steep right now. Can't swing the billet flywheel for sure.

I am more than likely going to rebuild my 13.5(12hp) but after seeing the 2 I have with the blown rods, I am leaning torward the billet rod.

Any tips on this engine build will be greatly appreciated. I should have my valve spring tool here on Wed.

And yes I have used the search function. Overload of info that is all over the place.

If you plan to run a governed class why worry about the billet rod? Not only is it illegal in any sanctioned organizations but there really is no need for it at stock rpms. Put the engine on bone stock and spend the extra money in your chassis. The chassis is the key ingredient in any class.

Because of the 2 stockers with holed cases.

Ultimately this engine will get "built" why buy a stock rod now just to buy a billet rod later?

If your rules allow then put the billet. I was just stating in any governed classes of the major sanctioning bodies that the engine must remain completely factory stock internally. Anything beyond factory parts would be deemed illegal.

noted.

Thanks Tank, so internal stock for goverened.

Well come to think about it, I do have another 12, I should just do a stock rebuild on one and build the other over time

Correct for any governed class the engine must remain internally stock.
