Hay sticks into my fingers just the same as straw when baling it?? And if they are sealed up, whats it matter? lol

Lol, still a safety hazard, someone could get injured at the track from setting on the bales and getting poked  :D

Hay or Straw, it really does not matter. You can call anything hay, if you mowed it, let it cure, raked it and baled it then its hay. Could be 75% weeds and it would still be hay (that’s the kind Paul bales down there in SW Iowa).  Straw on the other hand is basically the byproduct of oats or wheat.  Once the combine harvests the grain the left over’s are baled, mostly for bedding as it is much dryer and more absorbent.

OK there is your Iowa Farmer lesson for today.

I'm with Zach on this one. It all depends on the type of hay and what cutting it was made.

Why not use straw bales instead of hay? Last I knew, straw was about 1/3 the price of hay around here.

Can't say I have ever seen anybody use an actual hay bale for a race barrier. Hay is a lot heaver, harder, and most of the time green or greenish with a thicker pokey stems that I would not want not be fun to run into. Plus hay is feed straw is the waste left over from the harvest of wheat, oats, barley or other crops as mentioned earlier used for bedding not food. Most people just call call anything in a bale "hay" just like every bovine is a cow.

Well I got two of the three covered.

I would MUCH rather see straw around a track, it hurts alot less when you hit it!
And....why would anyone be sitting on the bales? Thats not a good place to be sitting during a race?LOL

What kinda junk are you guys baling that has thick pokey things in it? Only thing like that around here is Alfalfa....and nobody is going to use that bale of moneyon a race track, lol.

Lessons from Iowa??....here's a lesson for Iowa...Come to Kansas and learn what hay should look like! And yeah we know Straw in the Wheat state too  ;)

Either way...them $2 bags are saving any where from $5-$10 bales from mowstruction!

Here in the south we only have hay.. no straw.. unless it's pine needle straw. We have tried to put the bails in the plastic bags, this only made things worse with the hey molding and if hit the would just slide more across the ground..

I do use straw because yes it is cheaper, and also it's a little lighter than regular hay,as far as them sliding around being bagged.....I agree but, a little give when you hit one can't hurt!

I think those colored bags are cool ! a nice way to dress up a track too.I'm thinking white and black to create the checkered flag look ...I'm in for 100

"a little give when you hit one can't hurt!"

Kind of like "soft walls" in NASCAR!!  Absorb some of the energy and displace it.

Bud, find a sign shop that will make a vinyl cover and find sponsors to pay to have their logo on the bail, ie. Stabil, Valvoline, Briggs & Straton, Tractor Supply Co., EC Carburetors.  Now your bails have a dual purpose.

Don't use hay bales in Texas!! I just listened to a market report and small squares were selling for $27 ea in Texas! I'm looking for a flatbed and headed for Texas...lol

Never mind....I just realized I would have to drive through Kansas. Not worth the risk when I'm not sure where Rooster and Teddy Bear live!

But your not afraid to meet us in the dark parking lot of a seedy motel at 3AM when you need parts.....
If it helps you out...we live directly between you and Texas.  :werd:
