I'm not a oppy guy, but I do know a coild will go bad just sitting, possibly both decided to dump at the same time? Also did they ever come with points? possible point coil instead of a magnatron?

A magnet cant really be "bad" if it still has a magnetic pull to it. But if you test ran it with the same coil and your 100% sure the coil was installed correctly both times then logic states there must be something up with the flywheel.

Is it possible for the magnet and counterweight to be switched?  Make sure it is a magnet in there too.

Or the kill wire coming off the coil is grounded....

Right No harm no foul. I wasn't trying to short change ya. I guess it could happen to anyone. I forgot the oil slinger once myself. I just got lucky and realized it when I was pouring in the oil.

But anyhow. I checked the polarity and it's correct. Tom says it should be NORTH (+) in the center and SOUTH (+) on the edges, and that's what I have, but still no fire. Also he mentioned that the magnet could be broken, and you cannot tell that because what we are seeing on the outside is not the magnet, but a steel cover to protect it. Tom also said that you could not mistake the magnet because it is coated in tin. In other words it's really shiny. Another easy way to test the magnet's polarity is with another flywheel. Line up the magnets and they should repel each other.

OK with that said I put the factory wheel back on, and presto I have fire, so that leaves 1 thing that could be wrong. A broken magnet.

...put stock flywheel back on set air gap .010 fires right up runs like a champ.

If your engine is not running, then you change a part out and it starts running....pretty safe bet the part you took off is not working correctly, and the parts still on the engine ...WHILE IT IS RUNNING....are working correctly.

I know we never want to believe the expensive, brand new part is the culprit, but it happens.
