« on: January 18, 2012, 09:03:30 am »
Ok thinkin about tare the bottom pan of engine to inspect. If I remove a rod cap I should probaly replace the rod bolts? As engine has some races on it also should I replace the bearings even if there in good shape! No I have always in past

I've always thought if I go to all the work to remove the engine and pull the pan, and then the cap to "inspect" the rod/crank... the bearings will always show "some" wear (even if acceptable) so why not put new in... cheap enough compared to failure....

I have never replaced rod bolts, but generally haven't kept same engine/class for more than two years running...never had a bolt fail...

I always replace the rod bolts, even if I have to remove the rod when assemblying after I have done the required sequence. Put an old one in the vise as see how far over the recommended torque you have to go before it twists and keeps on turning.

I do know some who don't replace every time, your call.

If it has MWSC billet rods don't bother replacing the rod bolts, replace the whole rod if it makes you feel better. There are only so many cycles on an aluminum rod before it should be replaced. Replacing just the rod bolts would be like patching up a hole in a dixie cup.
If you have MWSC rods they are pretty tough, I've run my engine over 13,400rpm last year more times then once. I'm replacing the rods this season before they break. If you are only running it 8-9000rpm my guess would be that you have another season in the rods no problem. Anytime the engine is apart, always install new rod bearings in these kohlers.

Factory rods dont have rod bearings in them so no worry there.
As stated previously, it is up to you as far as rerplacing the rob bolts. I have reused the 8mm rod bolts if the engie was a low hr time & appeared to be a clean machine to begin with, if it has more than 500hr on it I replace them if reusing the rods. the smaller rod bolts I replace each time, dont like that taper design

Ok I'm not sure aboiut rods yet well see what has in it when pull pan I'm asuming that it has mwsc rod bcause I'm told they did port work on heads! I know that the guy that built it never ran it over 6500 so he said never needed to! don,t think it ran over 7000 only race 3 or so races or so last yr! I know it does have any or shoild I say very little blow by cause has breath on top of valve cover and no sign of oil hardly at all
