Cheap front brakes
« on: November 30, 2011, 06:31:07 pm »
After seeing Ryan Kerr's front brake setup this summer I decided to try and come up with some for my FXT on the cheap. After some calculating and checking clearances this is what I came up with. Started out by having some custom rotors laser cut for me. 6" diameter, 1/8 thick and with a 2 1/2" bolt circle so it will match up to the front hub. Found some 6061 aluminum tubing that will go in the lathe to make the correct size.

Then found some calipers on ebay that will work. They are single piston, lt. and rt. with hoses and a hand master (that I did not use). Here is a link for them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATV-Front-Hydraulic-Brake-110cc-250cc-/160655998621?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2567d7fe9d

After machining the spacers (sorry, forgot to take pictures) I used the front hub as a pattern to drill and tap the bolt circle for the hub and rotor. Then countersunk the extra holes in the hub to attach it to the spacer.

After test fitting everything I made a mount for the caliper and welded it to the spindles. Hooked everything up and bled the brakes. Running them into the same master as the rear brake with an adjustable proportioning valve.

Ended up with around $130 into them. Should be plenty of brake for this machine. I think I will still put them on the mill sometime and take some more material off of the spacers. They weigh around 2.5 lbs. with the hub and rotor.

VERY COOL!!!!!

Your inbox is going to be full of messages from people wanting you to build them rotors!!!

But seriously.  Weren't there any "ready" made rotors and hubs that would work with those calipers?

MCP's may be a good fit.  Wonder what just the hub and rotor cost?

I have a MCP minilite rotor but the pattern was different. Originally I was just going to run 3 long bolts all the way thru and they would also be the studs. Changed my mind as I was building them. You could use those rotors but they are like $30 + each. Plus I like doing stuff just to be different. Just look at my FXT. LOL

I just looked up spindles and rotors in APS.  $105 each for the cheap ones and I'm not even sure if they will work.  The MCP's are $156 each!!!

Awesome idea on your part!!!!!

Wish I had the skills and the equipment to do that!!!!!!

How come every time I have a great idea someone beats me to it????  I seriously just thought of this this past week!
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Sort of the same way but I'm sure he did it better. I think he used thin wall tubing and welded flanges on either end. I will find out on Friday if they work ok. I have a exhibition run for a winter festival to play with it.

Are the EC rotors too small of a bolt pattern?  I had one I was going to measure and now I can't find it lol.  This is AWESOME!

Are the calipers made of aluminum or cast iron? I know most are aluminum but for some reason those look like cast.

My guess is aluminum, I have never seen cast iron atv calipers, the japanese are masters with aluminum.

If you are talking about the EC front rotors, they are to small for the size of these calipers.

The calipers are cast aluminum and very light. Plus lt. and rt. sides so the bleeders are correct. Took me a long time searching to find a pair like these. Tried alot of other one and either the mounting was wrong or the caliper was to big.

The exhibition went great. First time I ever played on the street. Front brakes worked awesome. I mounted the proportioning valve so I could adjust it while driving and played with the settings all night. Dial the front brakes off and easily slide the rear around the corners or dial them back on and stop on a dime in a straight line. I think I am going to order some more calipers and put them on all my racers.

Glen
I'm thinking of buying a set of these brakes- can you please tell me the diameter of your rotors?
