17.5 Kawasaki OHV Air filter
« on: November 19, 2011, 02:49:22 pm »
I'm wanting to replace the stock Air Filter with an Intake/Racing filter (K&N). I've put one on my car and found it to increase the hp a good deal and hoping it has the same effect. However, the connection to the carb is not what I'm used to and I'm curious as to how would be the best way to do that. I've seen quite a few, so I know it's possible.

You may have to make something. I don't know of anything available off the shelf, but you may want to call EC monday. They may have them?

Would a K&N filter help performance?  Would it be worth the money and time?

Is there a recommended K&N filter?  I know that I will need to fab an adapter from carb to filter.  Just looking for an idea of size of filter or K&N part number.  Thanks again for all of the help.  It is greatly appreciated!

PROBABLY LIKE THE ONE EC SELLS FOR THE 12 BRIGGS. YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE ADAPTER.

Grubdigger,  would you use a stock exhaust or build a header.  If I built a header, is their a formula to figure approx size and length?  Dont want to build a header that sounds good, but robs me of engine performance.  Thanks in advance for any advise.......  I think that the stock exhaust can only has a 3/4 or maybe 1" exit header into a silencer can.  I would have to imagine that a new straight pipe would allow more air flow.......

On the 17 hp kaws the exhaust pipe is about 1 1/8 its really big pipe... but id keep it at 1 or 1 1/8 pipe for about 10 inches nd then mybe 1 1/4 and out make it at least 2 feet longall together... general rule of thumb do not make the exhaust pipe any bigger than the exhaust valve... ie if you have a 1 in exhaust valve then run one inch exhaust pipe

I am pretty sure Flipper (Joey) knows where to get the first piece of the pipe that bolts up to the head. The rest you just have to fabricate to fit your particular application.

I personally think your best bet is to run some 'aftermarket' pipe/bends that is a little thicker than the stock stuff and make your own exhaust flange out of 1/4" plate. This is especially the case if your motor will be ungoverened and have the balance system removed from it. Thin wall pipe like the factory stuff won't last long under those kinds of vibrations.
