Yep, your spot on, it's still worth the effort to change. a simple 1/4" plate drilled for the 1 1/4" cassitte could be welded to your 3 hole and easy to touch up. One trick I use is 4 bathroom scales, 2 under the front spindles after you have set then both the same height, then tack the rear axle in, place it over the 2nd set of scales and adjust them up or down from neatural until you get what you want, I personally make sure I can get more left side weight than right. Even if you think the frame is straight and equal, most times it is not.

Was doing a little more research on 1" vs. 1 1/4" tonight, and stumbled upon this old post by Rooster in another thread:

And easier to fix! I am a transaxle convert LOL. I haven't built a straight axle machine, but transaxles are a pain in the but to get apart after a hard hit to the axle! Took the last bent axle out in 7 pieces!

The tubes strength properties are much better than solid bar!

Funny how opinions change as time goes by! (Just razzin yah rooster, I appreciate all the input you've given throughout the years!):
1 1/4" dia, 1/4" wall tubing is only slightly stronger than 1" solid bar of the same material.
HOWEVER, once you cut an 1/8" deep keyway into that tubing, it is significantly WEAKER than a 1" solid bar with the same 1/8" keyway.

It's amazing how much we all learn as this sport progresses!

And thanks again everyone for all the advice!

LOL, that was 1 1/4" tube vs the 3/4" bar, not 1"
But yes, you are right, we live, race and learn!
The whole thing started as a discussion with one of our engineers at work...2 hours later and 50 virtual stress tests the results were in!

[
I have been airborne many times with some really exciting landings....I have never bent a axle.
LOL....but your mower weighs 22 lbs and you weigh what...23? LOL

I told you everybody would argue....that is ok.
And like I said, I am building with 1 1/4" now too, its just easier.

We can settle this,....
I'll let George jump my mower, then you let him Jump yours, then we see who's axle is bent!
