LOL. Sounds like me too.
As long as it works and doesn't fall apart, it sounds like a plan to me.

The only thing I can think of that would be better than that cap you're using is finding something that had a conical inside so the incoming air had a smoother path..... but I definitely won't knock what works for ya because it's a heck of an idea.

Actually they do make exactly such a fitting in PVC but it's not something you're likely to find at Menards or Home Depot. If you go to a 1" or 1 1/4" threaded female x 2 inch male glue Adapter with 2 a inch glue coupling or at least I think that's what size Squidd had up there to get 2 1/2" outside diameter from the looks of the picture.

These adapters are considered a terminal fitting on the end of water distribution lines, where you reduce down to the Curbstop. They're tapered on the inside to reduce force exerted on the fitting in the case of water hammer or air in the line. Very nicely tapered the length of the adpater too!! Only problem is they typically have a groove in the casting around the threaded hole to allow it to give when tightening the threaded fitting into the PVC so it doesn't split the entire end of the fitting setting up catastrophic failure as a result of over tightening. By design, if you overtighten it splits the fitting around the threads only to protect the remainder of the fitting. And, said groove around the fitting would likely present problems in the mating surfaces.

If one could find a similar adapter in glue to glue rather than threaded, it is very possible that said adapter would have the taper and would not have the groove.

The bolts on the carb are set 2 1/8" center to center or 2 3/8" outside to outside...

So you need at least a 2" pipe cap (2 3/8"ID - 2 3/4"OD) to clear the bolts...and then you still need to do a little careful grinding inside the cap to clear the nuts on the bolts and get a socket in there...

Cap head screws would give a little in clearance there..But with the right bit and careful work with the Dremel...can save that cost and trip to Hdwr store...

They did have "flatter" caps in other sizes..but for some reason the 2" caps all had the "hump" on them...15 seconds on the belt sander and she flattened right out...

The 2" pipe caps have a 2 3/4" OD which matchs the ID on the Air Filters I had already purchased...

OK...There she is...

Sami's S/S-J/P mowchine...up and running and ready for Graphics and a new seat cover...

Got the clutch working smooth engagement...only had to go thru 2-3 idler  pulleys to get everything at just the right tension with a standard sized belt...

Brakes are working great (at this point) lock the rear right up, but we will be watching for grease/oil on the disk...and upgradeing soon...

Still want to see how the 3/4" axle holds out...Held me fine for these "test runs" and I was bouncing pretty good on the ruts in the driveway....

Did have to switch engine pullys..7" and 7" gave a 8.5:1 ratio which would not have passed tech...So switching to 6" and 7" brings us to 9.75:1 which will be a little "slow" BUT (if my math works out) switching to a 9 tooth on tranny should bring us right into a 9.06:1 which will be right where it should for this class/rules...

Ordered sprocket today...

Graphics will be Vinyl, same as Rocky laid out for my A/P (ordered)...

And now the rest is up to Sami... :D

Everything looks good BUT if you don't oil that filter with some K&N oil the first dusty track you run you will be re-ringing it. Running it dry is no different than running without one.

Why put a good cotton/K&N type filter on it then choke it with a foam sock. Use the outer wear type pre filter cheap enough easy to clean and comes in many colors and they are designed for the cotton style filters with out restricting any air flow.

I just want you to know how much this is killing me. When I was maybe 12, I got an old huffy. I didn't know where to get pulleys, didn't have any money and couldn't weld so my modifications were limited to making a reclining seat and removing the hood so the steering wheel could be lowered. My dad wasn't about to say "I'll bet we could make that go faster", or even think it. Now, I've got a junk MTD and two wonderful boys, but somehow my dad's indifference to mechanical things was passed on to my boys, which is bad enough, but then I have to go through the torture of reading this thread.

I can't imagine anything more fun than building a pink and purple racing mower with a 13 yr old daughter.

Oh, no, wait. I can imagine something better; building one for me and one for her.

Thanks for the story.

Sounds like johntaves boys are pretty young yet I think that there is still time to instill some values in them my youngest boy was 4 when he drove his first go-kart. My most interested racer is 20 now and we have a lot of fun building and racing. So dont lose hope yet.
Its also good to see some girls interested those are going to make some good marriage material some day.
