Intek 18h v-twin
« on: September 12, 2011, 10:04:03 pm »
Hey guys,
What do I need to install my arc aluminum flywheel on my bone stock engine?  Thanks for any help....it's really needed.

Actually I already have the wheel on but have a few problems.  The stock starter doesn't quite mess with the flywheel.  Do I need a different starter or can this one be modified to work?  There is also too much of a gap between the coils and the wheel.  Is there a bracket to solve this problem?
Any ideas?

your flywheel should've come with aluminum coil spacers, that move the coils in, towards the flywheel.

As far as the starter goes, for now, i'm using a stock starter. It took one 5/16 washer under the forward mount to get it shimmed correctly, and a starter gear from a single flatty to get it to work without eating gears.

I just shimmed both the starter bolts on mine and it works with no trouble

I tried just shimming with the v-twin starter gears, and it still wanted to eat the teeth off of the gears (burnt up two gears, trial and error).  The flatty single starter gear seems to be a better match to the ring gear on the arc wheel, got two races on it, and numerous starts and no problems yet.  Just need a good charge on the battery.

You will eat the plastic starter gear long before the aluminum ring gear gets tore up with a stock starter

I definitely plan on getting denso after my engine build this winter, but for those with a pretty much stock engine, on a budget, the stock starter will definitely work for yah

I have been running a stock starter on a fully built v twin for two years and have never ate a gear and I use the plastic starter gear so if something did happen it would not eat the ring gear.

ok, I've changed the gear on the starter and that worked. I put on the brackets for the coils and had to spend 3-4 hours die-grinding to make the coils fit.  One coil fit good but the other one didn't.  Went to screw on the coil and the "ear" where you screw the coil on broke.  Hopefully JB Weld will hold it.  Put everything together and it won't fire although it ran perfectly before.  What have I done wrong?

When you mount the coils, watch the coil kill prong.  When I installed my wheel, I had to gently bend the prongs to clear the block.  Also, if your kill wires to coil terminals are not insulated, make sure to give them a good wrap of tape to prevent grounding to the block.

Where did you have to "die grind" for clearance?  I don't see that as a necessity

Can you take a picture of whats going on?

When using an ARC flywheel, it's impossible to mount the coils on an Intek twin without grinding the webbing that connects the two mounting towers for each coil on each side. I think that is what susie is referring to.

There was no need for me to die grind anything. My coils installed with no issues. Maybe some castings are worse than others

Maybe so because mine would not clear the webbing on the block, had to grind it down so the spade on the coil would clear the webbing.
