19hp single OHV Kohler
« on: September 11, 2011, 08:02:28 pm »
Running in a stock class but need to get more RPM's out of the engine without changing gearing. Any suggestions? The long stroke of the Kohler just isn't winding out.

Do they require a governor?

No. Not running a governor but I think I need a way to get more fuel and air into the engine. I have opened the exhaust and straight piped it.

Only turning around 4900 RPM, but I hear some of my fellow racers are turning the Kohler around 5700 RPM in my stock class. I'm beginning to think they are not STOCK.

So what do you think the RPM limit is on the stock flywheel and cam?

Remember they were designed to run 3650 cutting grass. I do know when you run a briggs to 5,000 people get nervous. Right around that the stock cam used up. Thats a briggs but I would believe kohler didn't mean to make their cam run to 6,000!

So I guess that turning over 5 grand would mean some cam, springs. Since there is no victory money, I guess some folks push the rules in the STOCK class. Besides, the only real rule in our organization is that compression can't be more than 140psi so I guess a little cam and flywheel work could be done without exceeding that rule. Thanks for the input.

First off I would shim the springs. You might be getting into valve float. I used washer as shims on my Opposed Kohler.. made an immediate improvement. I don't know if you can do the same on an OHV.

After you shim you would need to check to make sure you don't get into coil bind with the spring then readjust the rocker arms..

That's legal and I hadn't thought of that. I would be like running a stiffer spring but using the stock ones. Thanks, I think I will give that a shot. Still don't want to over run the engine's capability with stock cam and flywheel though.

TO ALL YOU KOHLER GUYS wouldn't you say 5,000 rpm limit on stock parts? I do not want anyone to get bad info.

Exactly.. I got that trick from Ryan Kerr at Ryker Racing..

All off topic posts were removed, he didn't ask for a discussion of the class he asked for help making his engine rune faster.

HOWEVER....
So I guess that turning over 5 grand would mean some cam, springs......

DO NOT MODIFY YOUR STOCK FLYWHEEL!
This is a very dangerous practice and any discussion on it is not allowed on Heymow!

Any talk of modification of a stock flywheel is grounds for termination of their account.
