I have had them crack in the lower cylinder support area but, not in the starter area..sounds like the starter might be binding-up or similar? Proper welding will be just fine.

Zach, check out the GX390 clone blocks on ebay. I've been running one and haven't had any problems, yet. They are probably a lot cheaper than what it will cost you to weld yours. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Honda-GX390-13-hp-ENGINE-BLOCK-13HP-CYLINDER-BLOCK-/220732493888?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3364ae9040

Hey Ron how big can you reasonably make a 390/420?
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Is that not a good thing?

Hey Ron how big can you reasonably make a 390/420?

I get them in the 485cc range but, they are hard on the rods. 440cc is the most reasonable.
im gonna have too drill and wire the pan bolts they vibrate loose i heard thats quite a common problem with the 390s .

The side cover bolts do vibrate out for sure..63% balancing is the best for what we use them for. I will recommend to red loctite studs in the block and use nylock nuts for minimum failure.

Is that not a good thing?

no...especially with Zack having all 390 parts.
