GX390 cub 100
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:21:22 pm »
This is my sons Cub. Its a model 100 with a gx390 honda clone from ec. I bought one of the engines they had on mega sale. Rejetted the carb. Fattend it up a little. Its stone stock otherwise. Runs in a 4000rpm stock class. I had my buddy make a driver adapter to use a stock cub 3 pin driver and bolt to the gx flywheel. Wed is its first hook. I will update with results.

I've been told the flywheels are good and there are tons of parts for them. After this year I will put some parts in it for him.

Hey that looks good!!! My motor is turned the other way around. Lol it's called bassackwards cause of that.
Trust me you will have no problem getting the kohlers. Just add more weight out front than usual cause the motor is very light!!! My motor in the stock class with no aftermarket parts I can spin it 6000 RPMs any day. With that many RPMs it makes a nice power band and it makes more torque! I need to put bigger gears in mine. What gears are you Running? Assuming 13,19,26. I run 14,18,20 and really need 15,16,17,19 gear. My mods are very simple and cheap. Let me know if you need any info about my motor. I'm sure you will be fine!

I would never go back to 12 stock altered class no more with this tractor. Only going to run against the flatheads in the 12 stock and 14 stock class and no problem with keeping up with them! Gears are my main issue, with new gears I would be a very good tractor! I'm working on a new motor hopefully I't will be another stock class tractor.

Good luck! You will really enjoy it!!! Of course it's a OHV buddy! Lol

Well it ran good. Held its own very well. He placed 5th out of ten. Not bad for the first hook. Will put up some video later.

Took the boy pulling again friday night. His first hook we didn't have enough weight out front. He couldn't steer it and drove it out of bounds with the front wheels up. He would have been in the money if that didn't happen. Next hook he got first place. His very first first place. The little clone motor is stout. I also just put a new cut on his tires so that helped as well. He was pretty excited.

If it's the same track as the video looks like they don't leave a lot of room for steering...(narrow)

Good job on the first first...!! I'm still trying to break into the top 3....

No its a different track Randy. The video was at a 4h fair. That was the first time we were at that fair and the fair commitee put in what they thought a track needed to be. They want us to come back next year. The track that club normally pulls on is excellent. 25-30ft wide. All clay. It gets 200gal of water worked in before each pull. Pulls are at night under the lights. Super good bunch to pull with.

Flathead puller- did you use the same mounting holes as the kohler to mount this? Or you had to drill out new holes? I'm going to flip my back around to where the clutch is driven off the flywheel side insted of where I have it now which is on the PTO. I didn't built this tractor so I don't have anything to go by with...

I had to drill new holes. If you need a driver hub my buddy can build you one. It uses 3 holes in the stock flywheel that are not tapped. utilizes the stock fan and a stock or aftermarket driver.

When I put my kohler aftermarket clutch hub that's made for threaded kohler cranks it actually fits. I plan on not using flywheel fans. The dowel pins fits inside one of the three holes. So I prolly can tap it out and use a socket head cap screw the same diameter ad the holes in the flywheel.

Well season is over now.

Just had the boys engine apart. Added an advance key, parsons 3 stage pipe and 1.3-1  rockers with heavy guide plate. Completly different sound. Added around .070 cam lift by changing rockers. Updating the clutch this winter and installing a 19-20 gear set. Should wake it up.
