I found a link that gives a pretty good description:

http://www.custompistols.com/cars/articles/balanced.htm

I've known about balancing, but was never sure what the term "blueprinted" meant either.

It's just a matter of making sure each part meets the factory specifications. You would be surprised how many parts in your engine are far from what the specs for the part actually say it should be. You measure and adjust the part to meet the actually specs listing in the service manuals provided by the manufacturer. It is very difficult in mass production to make every part perfect but after you go through the parts you theoretically have an engine built and performng the way the manufacture intended it to be in a perfect world of manufacturing.

It is time consuming but worth the trouble.

Or measure and adjust the size of parts to meet your needs, grass cutter or racer.

Egggxactly...
Blueprinting simply means checking that each and every part matches the "blue print", which is actually in itself an outdated term. Very few places use actual "blue prints" any more.

Or measure and adjust the size of parts to meet your needs, grass cutter or racer.
ANd this is the better way to do it, lol!

Blueprinting is a little more than just checking all your clearences. It's more of keeping track of all engine specs. theres a good book about engine blueprinting you can get at any book store. The book has alot of info. in it. Your also keeping track of the spring pressures, lash, timing, piston and rod weight(balancing),cam specs. It's a detailed log of your engine.

correct, all that is engine blueprinting. But keeping track of spring pressures, valve lash, compression, is all part of maintaining a performance engine. Meaning the engine will tell you when to correct a problem   [sometimes]. Remember the engine is just a component like the rest of the racer steering, brakes, trans, rear axle, all of it needs specs wrote down. Blueprinting a engine is still setting clearances to fit the purpose it's entended for.
