You do not need that kind of motor for your first build.
Find you a 16HP Vanguard, that is the easiest to get your feet wet with a twin.
But a single or an Opposed twin would be a better starter motor.

I have raced before and helped on my cousins mowers and building them so it isn't my first venture into the mower rodeo. I was just curious what twin makes the most HP and is the best platform to build up. What do you use in your Mowchine??

Full boogie EC Vanguard, over 40 horses and will wiggle at half track... George can build a Tecumseh that will fly(with the right pilot).
Unless you have pulled the trigger on a HOT engine, you can help all the cousins you want.... LOL I know. I helped my cousin with
his 713 CI alky injected 1300+ HP mud truck, don't mean I can drive it like he does.

The Vanguard is the easiest platform to build on. That 16HP is 30CI, and you can build on it. And sell it later, when you are ready to
get a 38CI. Or a Tecumseh, or a Kawasaki, Kohler, or an Intek. All make power, more of it is not always better. The price for the big
power can reach $6,000.

Sounds good to me. I guess I should have posted that I raced drag radial, outlaw 10.5 and true street for years. Going 740's on a 10.5 tire at 198mph is quite fun but getting a 1800hp car down the track on a 275 drag radial with stock style suspention takes a driver and in the 10 years I raced I never scuffed a fender in a pass. The last engine I put in my 67 nova was a 598ci big chief with an F-3 procharger on alky making 48# of boost. 2263hp at 7900rpm. So I know a lil about horsepower in a touchy chassis. ;)

With all due respect given, you drag car ain't in NO WAY shape or form to driving a mower with full blown fully built V-TWIN and NO suspension. If you go in even thinking that you WILL get HURT or hurt someone when it shows you what I mean.

My opinion a built twin is definitely not a starters engine.

It does not matter the engine if the mower or the driver is not right.
Twins are the power house, but the mower has handle that power.

Kohler is the strongest but cost for the performance. The vanguard will give great bang for your buck. Each twin has those who can max them out. It just depends on how deep your pockets are and how full they are.

Thank you for the info guys, I understand how some of you may think I am inexperienced in this arena and you are correct as I have only one mower event under my belt and only took second place in that. I have multiple championships in other motorsports though and am by no means ignorant to chassis setups or deaf to what a chassis needs to work. If it makes anyone here feel better I am running an 8hp flatty on the new build for the first event and until the chassis gets sorted out. I was just curious what you would chose for a twin to build and what you would do to them.

Thank you,
Darren

Darren to answer your question the Kohler v-twin is what I am running built buy Cromwell Racing Engines (cromwellc4 is his user name on here. I ran a Tecumseh but have found more usable hp in the Kohler. Cromwell also builds a mean vanguard and I good at locating engine parts.

Good luck and God bless, Brian Smith #B33

Thank you Brian.
This is exactly what I am looking for. We have a 22hp Kohler V-twin that I can use and have been considering it. Thank you again and best of luck this season!!!

Also the Kohler isn't as expense to build as most people think.

And that was suppose to read Cromwell is good at locating parts.

And thanks, I need all the luck I can get.

I appreciate the info Brian, We have had this engine for about 5 years and havent touched it as we had heard that the Kohler wasnt the prime foundation to build on. What are some of the mods you have done to yours..??

I run the Super Sportsman class as it's known in ARMA or BP as it's known in USLMRA. the engine rules are basically stock appearing with factory carb produced for the engine you are using.

I have won the past 4 races I have entered with it 2 being ARMA national races and one the All American championship. But I realize that luck you were talking about has a lot to do with it.

Most people don’t believe me but it is basically stock with a good cam and rocker setup. We haven't even got to flow the heads yet. Lol.
