turf gard tires faulty batch?
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:09:33 am »
Hey everyone,
Last fall I bought a set of turf gard tires (13x6) new.  I mounted them on aluminum rims, and never used them until this year for the 1st time ever.  Over the winter they went flat, and I aired them both up.  They leak down completely every day, and when checking them, I found that the sidewalls about 1/4" outside the bead have what look like splitting, or knife cuts in them.  This happened before any use whatsover.  these cuts vary in size between 1/4" and 5/8" long.  they run the circumference of the rim in patches.  Did I do something to cause this?  Or does this sound like some type of defect?  Any info would be much appreciated.  Also- should I use a tube on this?  I've heard that tubes cause tire geometry to get wierd, like having the centers bulge out more than normal.  Thanks!  -Alex-

Dry rot from sitting. Not a defect. Rubber "lubricates" itself as it flexes. When tires sit they dry out.
I run tubes in some of my tires with success. But I wouldn't ever run a tire with dry rot.

Letting a tire sit flat is the worse thing you can do to one.
