Any Yamaha motorcycle guys on here?
« on: May 25, 2011, 11:08:28 pm »
Here's the deal.

I have a 04 Yamaha Road Star and I'm looking to upgrade the carb.  I've done some mods and now the stock carb don't like them.  I've tried everything to make it better, but I still have a cough as I start to roll in the throttle off idle.

I screwed up and didn't buy the Yamaha Speedstar carb last year, they have now discontinued it.  It is a Mikunni HSR 42 that accepts stock cables and the stock TPS.

I can slap on a HSR 42 and modify the cables, but the TPS is an issue.  I want to keep the TPS as it helps with the low end and driveability.  Not so much concerned with top end.

So Yami guys, what are my options?

And to all you, "you should of bought a Harley" guys..............you better have a 04 or newer Harley sitting in your garage to give me crap.  If you have a Sportster, it don't matter what year, I will shut you down.  The Yami was what I could afford and I paid cash for it new............so keep your jokes to yourself!

If I didn't have 3 racing mowers.........................I'd have a Harley.....................but don't remind the wife!!!

Yep I'm a Yamaha guy. 2002 Roadstar midnight beautiful bike with all the chrome and bought nnew. Never a problem out of it. But its a cruiser and a show piece. Not for speed. So that's why I bought a Hayabusa.  190+ mph........

My past Yamaha's have decently loved the Dyno jet jet pack. I would hope that they make them for a road star when I have used them in the past what a great change in all rpms.

I've got the Dynojet jet kit in the carb.  The problem is that I'm running pipes, ported manifold and had the heads ported when they were off for a recall.  So the carb spits back.  The accelerator pump doesn't deliver enough fuel at the right time when opening up the throttle.

Guess I will have to play with it some more.

You sir, need one of these. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/20164/412810.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.buellforums.com/forum/showthread.php%3Ft%3D15786&usg=__2xqi08t-OK2CwAZjKbuUKzAkFoE=&h=155&w=200&sz=6&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=sJbAk-_itssoLM:&tbnh=123&tbnw=159&ei=UrjeTcn3IKTw0gHip-yqCg&prev=/search%3Fq%3D4%2Bstroke%2Bcarb%2Bsplitter%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1R2GGLD_enUS349%26biw%3D1003%26bih%3D567%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=141&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=103&ty=92
What that piece does, is when your rolling on the throttle it stops the air from hitting the slide at the top causing circulation thus pulling the air mixture away from the carb, but the hole in the plate is just large enough to let the fuel mixture flow from top to bottom, like a syphon pulling more air in. Its a great design and I've put them on a few quads and bikes, its made mainly for 4 stroke mx quads and bikes, but i have seen one put on an old triumph race bike.
By the way those are like $120 new but you can make one yourself.

Bud,
I'm assuming he has a race shop.  Or does he do street bikes too?  All the race shops just slap on a regualr HSR 42 and bypas the TPS becasue on race bikes they just tune for WOT performance.

I don't have a problem with the mixture, it is the acclelerator pump.  So I don't think that will have any affect on my problem.
