good or bad idea
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:18:46 pm »
I am playing with something on my mower. Please comment. I am currently running 15x6.50x8 tires on the rear and i am wondering if it would be good to run a 16x6.50x8 on the right and 15x6.50x 8 on the left like a sprint car. Now, i have checked the ratio more than once and they are both the same ratio but of course the 16 is taller. Would this be a good idea. I have a transaxle and i am running on a oval track.

There might be too much stress on the case to take that much difference in the stagger of the tires. I think you might break the case or an axle..

Unless the track is heavily banked I do not see where it would benefit you.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

I was once told by a wise chassis man that if you have your set up right in this game you can get enough stagger with same size tire and wheel with just changing your tire pressures...

In my limited exp. this is very true. run a lower tire presure on left rear and pump that right rear up. When u get to the point where u are barely pickin the left rear up that thing will turn.

You can only go so far before you lose forward bite.. You don't want the RR any harder than the point where the tread is completely flat.. after that you will lose the amount of tread on the ground which effects forward bite off the corner.

Everyone that turns left runs stagger, if you don't, you wont turn left very well.
But that may be a bit much?
The only way to find out is experiment, what works on one mower won't on another.

We had a guy in our club do that. Worked GREAT for him. Bigger on the outside smaller on the inside by about an inch or so

Just make sure to actually measure the tire circumference and find out the difference, dont wanna be to much of a difference, but not to little. You will have to experiment with tire pressures, and possibly a few different set of tires, as they wont all have exactly the same circumference.

Reference to a good thing, any outlet store sells a flexible tape, my mom used to use one when she made my shirts back in the old days, got mine from Wally World for about $1.75. Rolls up when your done.

To stay legal (ARMA) you must keep the size of the tire the same, but you can buy them from a different manufactor, amazing how much difference there is in them!

I have had over 3" of stagger using different brands and tread patterns of the same size tire!

That is no longer legal in the USLMRA, must be same size, tread and manufacturer!
