Valve seats
« on: May 16, 2011, 07:18:51 pm »
anyone have any clue what the biggest I can safely go when cutting for new valves. I stumbled onto a guy who is gonna teach me how to recut my head and put larger seats into an 12hp block. We are racers in the S/P class and have a motor in my racer for racing. We were just wondering if you guys would share some info for another motor in a different class.

all you can do is do it. if it doesnt work try something else. not everyone will tell their secrets and most of what we can do is done many times to see what works or not. you will find this out quickly when you went to big. not only that if you keep at it you may know something that nobody else knows. then you will have the edge. after a year or two, you must share. :D

get a scrap block and do what grubby said! you don't always scrap out blown up parts. they turn into experiment pieces. think before you scrap!

My 8hp came with a 1" intake, it now has a 1 1/2" in it, you have to cut the side of the head out so it has room to go up. You need to decide how much work you want to go through for bigger valve. Bigger isn't always better, unless your going to turn the snot out of it you may hurt yourself on power.

Simple answer, as long as the valves don't hit each other, you can go that big...

Thanks for the replies guys I kinda figured that stuff was pretty secret. The guy who wants to teach me some machine work says the same things. I have 2 extra 28ci blocks to experiment with both are running now. Guess I will have to see if either I can make them run better or blow them up. OH the price of learning. :)

Well you didn't ask what size, you asked how big can i go, lol!
The bigger the valve the higher rpm your power band will be.
I run 1 3/8 ports, which translates into a little under 1 1/2" intake valve.
1 1/4 exhaust port and a 1 5/16 valve on it.

And like Tommy said, its alot of work to get those in there!
