Backwards Vanguard
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:54:16 pm »
Hi all. New here. I've raced lots of machines but never a mower!
I'm replacing a Briggs 16hp I/C single with a worn-out Vanguard 16 that I'm refreshing - top end, valves, etc. Poor I/C had 6400 hrs on it. Third rebuild. She finally let go with a nice big fiery explosion. The Toro 52 (yes, it cuts grass :( ) it's going into takes the power from the flywheel end of the engine. I havent been inside the I/C, but I know the Vannie has a plain bearing on the flywheel side as opposed to a ball bearing unit on the output side. Does anyone think this would be a problem? The Toro uses pulleys mounted to the flywheel
which cause a radial load on the shaft. I'm probably worrying too much. I hope to get another 6000 hrs out of this unit ;-)

I have seen plenty of vanguards run off the flywheel side it should be no problem. Good luck with getting 6000 more hrs from it.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't expect 6K hrs out of it  ;)
I recently rebuilt a 400cc Kawasaki golf cart engine that said on the model # label "Expected Engine Life: 1000 hrs". The unit had 2400 hrs on it when it started to smoke.

thats what all the kaws say on them... the liquid cooled 20 hp engines in the 425 and 445 deeres were luckey to see that if you didnt replace the cam... just for the sake of noise they used a plastic cam gear which if it went it would bend pushrods valves wipe out the oil and water pump gears (also plastic) and you would have a big pile of plastic you had to deal with gettin out
There's somethin' in the works...

^^ Now that sounds like a very poor design, but I guess plastic is cheaper...

I've got a 15hp Kaw FH430V with about 1K hrs on it. Does this mean I should take a look inside?

Are you saying I should replace the cam, or the whole innards - pistons, rods, etc...
Or are you pullin' my chain  ;)

Got it. No offense intended. I didn't know the weak spots of the Kaw VTwin. Too much plastic inside. Who knew...
