I see that most racers use a 5/8" Steering shaft.....How have these been holding up? Reason I ask is for years I've been working on ATV's and their steering shaft is a good 1-1.250" OD! I know ATV's will be taking a much bigger beating than our mowers will ever see...but to "ME" a 5/8 steering shaft seems a little on the weak side for racing mower that could be going around a uneven track surface at speeds over 30 mph! I can see a 5/8" shaft being fine if we all raced on asphalt, but we don't. I also look at it this way as well....most of our mowers are front engine design. We have this heavy hunk of steel sitting over our front axle...this it self makes it harder to turn compared to a KART where the front end weight is at a minimum. I know most KARTS run a 5/8" shaft but they are running a much lower overall weight than our racers to!
So...my question is......does anyone run anything larger than a 5/8" shaft?
