Baja SAE Redesign for TREC series racing
« on: March 18, 2011, 07:28:43 pm »
I thought you would appreciate the buggy I have co-built with my friend Chris.
It was originally built for the Baja SAE college competition.  Please check out the build thread at minibuggy.net

http://www.minibuggy.net/forum/projects-progress/13946-redesign-baja-sae-champion-vehicle.html

Thanks to all who have given influence and inspiration through your postings to help us with the engine build!
Please post thoughts and comments!

16hp block. 0.128" longer ARC rods. 0.061" shaved pistons. M38 heads. ~12:1 compression. M35 2 bbl carb. Comp cam. Removed governor. Electronically limited to 6500 rpm (thanks to Goeytex). ARC billet wheel. Heavy duty valve springs, pushrods, etc

Should run pretty good, first test in completed chassis form is today! Will be doing jet and clutch tuning for the first race April 2.

BTW, in some pictures you may see an M38 lingering in the background, plans are to build that time permitting after the first race.

Test day

First day out testing:

We have some clutch tuning to do, but the engine ran pretty good for its initial setup.  We weren't seeing the RPM range that we were hoping for, but we will get there.

First race is a week from yesterday, so this week will be busy with cleaning and prepping the car.  The race is at 5pm on saturday, so we will be testing and tuning all day saturday.  I'm so excited!

Here is another video of the car. Check out the rest of the videos posted by him (Chris, the car owner) enjoy the music!

First race is on Saturday in Attica, Indiana.  We are pretty much ready, final prep and packing tonight. Final clutch and engine tuning will be saturday morning.

We built an M38 last week as a 'just in case' backup. It is built very similar to the M30, just scaled in a few places.  It will be built again into a mod motor sometime after the first race.

Here is the most recent video of the car with the M38 in it.

At this race we blew apart the tranny, and have since put in a newer, somewhat stronger one. We won the race last weekend, and are now leading points! Engine is coming out right now to get twin carbs.

Thanks again for all the ideas! It's nice to enjoy some of the responses you guys get when you tell people its a mower engine :)

Well, things have been going well for the 13Motorsports team. We got the twin carbs on and tuned in:

Motor runs awesome now! We are using Keihin PE28s. Loving this setup.

Car ran awesome at the last race and took home another W!

Pulled the holeshot and led the stockish SxS class including RZR, RZR S, a Rhino, and a Teryx.

Car will not be getting much before the next race, just clean, simple once over, and prep.
