Timing on GX 670
« on: February 24, 2011, 03:45:56 pm »

Hi,   How can I adjust the timing on my Honda GX 670 with out to much trouble :bash:
I could win a bit by milling the keyway down but i'd need more than just a few degrees. :omg:
anyone got any tips for me :D
 Cheers nod ;)

throw the key away. advance it about 1/4-1/2 key. tighten with an inpact about 150-200 foot pounds. it wont move. ive done this on my kawasaki for years. works fine with no key.

What I do to all my briggs is to simply count the number of teeth on the ring gear and then divide 360 by that number. This is the degree each tooth is. Now line up the keyway, and using a marker draw a line on the block even with a tooth on the flywheel and mark the tooth as well. Now advance the number of teeth needed to get to your ideal timing. Look at the advance on the keyway, remeber it. Tighten down the nut. Then loosen and recheck. I have seen the flywheel move as it is being tightened even with an impact.

Yes it would. We do it on chainsaws also using the cooling fins or just a circumference  measurment and figure out how far we need to move it.

Hi,  Is it through trial and error to determin the advance needed for the set-up of the engine or is there a general guide line to how many degrees advance there is needed
The tip with the teeth is a good one Thanks.  :)

Chainsaws?  I need a clarification on that one.  Are these for cutting trees or competition?
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Competition mainly. We do modify some "work saws" just a bit to tweak out a couple of extra ponies. I have a 140 cc saw that runs on 60% nitro methane.

If you go much more than 30* you will start having trouble with a motor that is otherwise stock.

you would not want any more than 3 degrees of advance on mild built or stock engine.
