22 special compared to any other 8 hp is powerfull... but compared to SP CP or any other "power" motor its low on torque...

Hence (I think) the skinny tires work better..

I run the 13X6.5's all around on 8" rims, they do well for me. The wide rim really pushes the side walls out and they refuse to "Roll Over" My thought is this, If I stand straight up with my heels and toes together, you can push me over with one hand. If I spread my legs out 3 feet, it's very hard to push me over.

But I have seen people run very well with a narrow tire. A lot of it is your driving style.
LOl..no comment, other than you should have your legs spread 38".....

13 X 5 , I run that on the front of my super stock , Steel white wheels replace the cheap bearings with the snap ring bearings , Besides did'nt you say 4 1/2 wide how you going to put a 6 wide tire on there without it having tons of sidewall flex , You will be suprised just how much the 5 will bite . Mark , Correction Big Chuck runs the 4 1/2  But anyways thats what I run to

Hmmm, you guys have me thinking about that thing now. Common sense tells me the more rubber touching the ground equals more responce to the steering as far as the front of the mower not sliding and gripping the turns. However, the more rubber touching the ground means more resistance for the same reason.

Skinny tires would want to slide more I would think since they are trying to carry the same load around the same corner with the same forces affecting them. The smaller racers with shorter wheelbases and smaller motors are still turning very close lap times as the big dogs according to scoring sheets I have viewed from USLMRA timing. Around the corners we are talking about the same speed, on the straight aways the big dogs take off. I think halfway inbetween might be a good combo.

Lapped Traffic, your question was the height, not the width and Rooster is exactly right that the taller tire would have better roll. That's why 10-speed bicycles use TALL skinny tires. I also remember watching the dirt cars running and their skinny fronts going back and forth for quick responce on correcting around the corners....

I have a headache now but I am going to try 15X6X6 and if I finish my project before you, i'll tell you how it does...

More rubber does not always mean more steering...part of traction is weight per inch cubed....

So what your saying is for some drivers, the amount of traction is directly relates to the amount of cake consumed??????????  !!!!!!!!! LOL

Sure theres a few guys that do it. Its truly an art though. Cut the wrong spots and things fold over and actually hurt you more than they help. Cut too much and take the wind right out of your sail if the tracks right. The list grows and grows. Its something that you have to find what works best for you and your weight/horsepower combo. Oh and by the way, its VERY time consuming
