Lapped traffic, we run 15 x 6 fronts and the same rears as you. We too are limited with very few modifications. 8hp, stock flywheel, and so on. We do very well with this combination. Can send you a pic of our two "stock class mowers" if you wish.

Sorry for the delay,  we run the standard white steel ones in the front, 4 1/2 wide. the rears are off the 800 series transaxle that i find. will have to measure a spare one for you. Also the axles have the "flat sided ends", if that makes sense..  CHUCK

Taller tires roll easier, shorter tires make the front end lower...there is a case to be made for each.

If you are using stock front wheels with cheap bearings, the bearings will appreciate the taller tires!

I'm thinking the same way and trying to make my decision on my budget AP class build this Summer. Height of the front end is not an issue because if I use a 15" tire I simply raise the front axle up 1" and my frame will be the same as if I we're using a 13" tire.

Paul Cash used to run a AP with some TALL skinny tires that looked really cool and he made these adjustments to keep a frame height of 4" as per USLMRA rules. I think I will be using what is available at the best price, (free). I would pay attention to the width though. You'll get more tread to the ground with like a 6.5 width and that will give you more bite up front for better steering on a shorter track with tighter turns.

I liked the skinny tires on my AP, not a lot of weight or power on those machines, so the wider tires tend to "float" and slide rather than bite and turn... not to mention rolling resistance..

The tall skinny tires Paul Cash ran were 4.80-8 trailer tires.  They had square shoulders and turn very well.  I don't know if they are still legal but I still have them in my shop.

I thought you we're running that Don G 22 special he and his mad machinest built. My son runs that motor and it has ALL kinds of power.
Maybe that was someone else. Shawn runs 13X6.5X6 Masters all the way around and handles like a dream.

I run the 13X6.5's all around on 8" rims, they do well for me. The wide rim really pushes the side walls out and they refuse to "Roll Over" My thought is this, If I stand straight up with my heels and toes together, you can push me over with one hand. If I spread my legs out 3 feet, it's very hard to push me over.

But I have seen people run very well with a narrow tire. A lot of it is your driving style.
