frame stiffing
« on: February 10, 2011, 01:35:01 am »
I have read a few posts on builds but no one has said what wall thickness that they were useing .
I have used 3/4 sq. .120 wall for most of my builds , but is .060 wall too thin in a 1 sq, for more than just reinforcing?

3/4 thin wall.... I think 14ga. or 16 ga. You are fine with the .060.

Stiffness has more to do with material farther away from the center. A taller thinner I beam is far stiffer than a short fat one.
A 1" X 2" thin wall tube is far superior to a thick wall 3/4" tube. It isn't the weight it's the overall size for stiffness.
Hope that helps.
