FYI factory fuel lines = no go
« on: February 07, 2011, 09:31:59 pm »
3rd mower this year came into my shop with the same problem no fuel and bad fuel pump. I blew out the fuel line (factory line) and out came a 12" piece of rubber worm along with various other sizes of black scraps.Granted I am in calif. where our fuel is horrible on parts, and this mower is only 4 years old!
Neoprene or Teflon line is the only way to go,also it's a good idea to run a 'hard line' as far as you can with just 4" connectors of soft line at the ends with insulated hold downs.

I'm kinda perplexed if extreme temperature changes has an adverse effect on fuel line also ? I know heat does but what about cold? We just went through a pretty good cold spell here wondering if those of you that have it alot have seen this ? Rubber seperation due to freezing ????

I think it's more than likely from the ethanol that they put in all the gas nowadays. It tends to be pretty hard on rubber.

Not here.  And mine are out in the shed all winter.  But then again this summer I was having troubles with my 2001 cub in the fuel delivery dept.

Thanks
For the heads up I'll have to look for that once the 3' of snow melt in the front yard.

Every three months we have to replace the fuel line in the husky chain saw because the fuel hardens the line and it cracks.

Wow. We have had the same fuel line on our Stihl 038 saw for 23 years and never had a problem. Anyhow, I personally like to use the 'kart' type fuel lines. They harden up after a while but don't plug themselves up!! And if you get a light colored one, you can see anything inside that may plug it up ;)

It's not only craftsman, I've had to replace fuel line on JD mowers less than 2 years old due to rotting from the inside out.

Ethanol has been around since the late 70's here in the mid west, so dealing  with seperation has became normal. It was first called gas-ahol. I have to promote it cause I farm and it makes sinse from the numbers side of it. even for the average consumer, but will small engine manfutures make changes to except? I know they are putting catilic converters on weedeater/chainsaws now. Bigger motors Not sure? And what about carb parts? just my view

well in Calif our gas has always been an issue, be it octane or "additives".In carbs the presence of calcium deposits is replacing the dreaded "black granules" it seems that our fuel now attracts more moisture ??

on this mower I replaced the fuel pump as well for insurance. This stuff is nasty, you should see the 12" piece of rubber worm that finally blew out of the feed hose....it melted the pick-up tube grommet too!
so common that my briggs dealer STOCKS them.

I HAVE AN SOLUTION FOR YOU. DONT KNOW IF YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS BUT CREST ULTRA SONIC. ITS A MACHINE THAT YOU PUT THE CARB IN. THE SOLUTION IS WATER AND A SOAP. 9:1 RATIO. WORKS VERY WELL. THE CARB WILL COME OUT LOOKING NEW. MOST TIMES YOU WONT EVEN HAVE TO PULL WELCH PLUGS. THIS WILL SAVE YOU FROM REPLACING THE CARB MOST TIMES.

LAST YEAR AT THE SHOP WE RAN ABOUT 250 CARBS THROUGH IT AND ONLY 2 HAD TO BE REPLACED. WORTH THE INVESTMENT IF YOUR DOING ALOT OF CARB WORK.

Not just in CA  My carb on my cub grass mower needs to be cleaned out 4 times season. Lots of deposits in the bowl.

In all actuality ethanol is not the answer to our energy problems.  It has been documented that your fuel mileage goes down with ethanol because you have to burn more ethanol to get the same power. Ask anyone that uses methanol as a racing fuel. The first thing you do is go to bigger jets.  As far as fuel lines go, we have also seen this issue at our dealership with small engines also.  I am also in the farming community, but I don't push ethanol from corn because there are better ways to get it.   Tom
