The Curse of the Solenoids
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:57:57 pm »
Well, this last weekend, i hooked the battery up on my MTD to try to turn the engine over, and it wouldnt work. so i took out my light tester, and found out the Solenoid wont work. So i put away the MTD for now, and went over to my Ford mower (which has been sitting un-used for about 3 weeks now) and i went to start it up to go ride it around in the woods, BUT then IT wouldnt start EITHER! so i took the battery out and polished all the wiring connections, put it back together, and it STILL wouldnt work! so i took my light tester out again and found that THIS Solenoid is shot too!!! so now both mowers have shot solenoids and i have no money. So now i have no idea what to do. Is there a way to repair the solenoids? or is there a place i can get one for cheap?
Gotta love a good 'ol Briggs Flathead!

Ok thanks for all the help guys,

Scott: i thought about it might be the bracket that grounds the solenoid, but the solenoid bolts to a painted surface, so i know that it dosent ground where it mounts. And when i get home today, i'll ask my dad, then i'll PM you my address.

Matt: i tried that and i know its the solenoid because when i tested it with the light tester, no power would go through the solenoid even with the key on start.

Jamie: i'll try that if i cant get a new one, thanks.

a solenoid,is a solenois, is a solenoid, there all the same principal, just get one off of anything that would run the same amperage or a little higher and bolt it on. I've taken them apart with quite a bit of success aswell though. If its rivets drill them out and just pull the top off, spray a bit of crown on there and inspect for broken wires near the coil or switch, put it back together and it should work. Remember a solenoid is only a switch, the reason we use them is so you dont have to run thick starter wire all the way to your ignition, if you just want to go for a tour and its broken, take a pair of insulated pliers and put them on connection 30 and 87 (battery and wire to starter) than keepo them in your pocket incase it stalls on your tour.

if all else fails steal one off your moms car,and replace it with yours, that way your mom will take her car to be fixed, and theyll put a new solenoid on it, than when it gets back you switch the new solenoid for the one youve got on your mower that originally came off her car, brand new solenoid for the mower!

if i'm right, an engine wont start by just hooking the battery JUST to the starter, because there will be no power to the ignition.

UNLESS its a fired ignition such as a car or older style that uses a coil it will run. The magnetron/armature ignition on most air cooled engines simply need the magnet on the flywheel to pass by it at a certain rpm or higher to trigger the igniton spark.
