« on: December 29, 2010, 07:35:55 pm »
i fried my starter solenoid my mtd and im pretty sure its the stock one from the 70s. i put a new solenoid i had for our ford laying around and i fired it up and ran great. i went to fire it up the next day and im not getting any power to the starter side of it unless i disconnect the starter from the cable. any idea what it could be? ive checked everything i could think of

disconnect the starter from the solenoid and push the starter button too see if the solenoid is clicking, if youre grounds are good and the solenoid clicks, but there is no power to the starter side of solenoid, get a new solenoid, if  it doesn't click when pushing the starter button check the wiring for your starter button, make sure the solenoid is getting 12 volts to the little post when pushing the start button!

im not getting any power to the starter side of it unless i disconnect the starter from the cable.

If I understand this right, you are using a volt meter or even a test light on the cable where it bolts on the starter. When the wire is hooked to the starter you get nothing, when it is unhooked from the starter you get voltage?

Either a shorted or hung starter maybe.
i ive checked everything i could think of

Have you tested the starter?

You mention that you are using a solenoid from an "old ford". Perhaps that particular solenoid requires more amperage than a typical mower solenoid. The clicking sound to me sounds like you either:

A: Have a weak battery
B: Are using the incorrect solenoid
C: The Solenoid is faulty.

Charge your battery. Multiple clicks from the solenoid is indicative of a weak battery. There is enough amperage to activate the solenoid, but not enough to hold it closed and power the starter at the same time. If it clicks once and has voltage present on the starter lead when disconnected, tells me the solenoid is working. You can have 12 volts at almost 0 amperes, so simply testing for voltage doesn't always tell the whole story. Also have you found what cooked the original solenoid? There isn't much to them and frying one may be the result of a short somewhere in the system, but not always, it is an electro-mechanical device and can fail on its own.
