Driver Eligibility (Edited)
« on: December 25, 2010, 08:42:17 AM »
Guys and Gals: I think we need to rally behind this header to keep our growing little sport, well in a word, GROWING! I truly believe that this sport, regardless of which rules body it is, needs to change their rules to an ability based scale not an age one. Have a day where a kid can have a driving test with racing officials present where the kid has to be able to demonstrate his or her abilities to move up to the next class. This is just my .02 worth here. Let the Kids race or lose them forever! Once they leave mower racing from boredom they won't be back! We need to grow our sport from below not strangle it. Again this is just my  :twocents: worth.

NOTE::: I have severely self-moderated this thread to Stop the flames that have apparently started toward the end.Let's be safe and have fun.

Does that mean we can take some of the older drivers that "aren't" that good and drop them to a lower class ??

Or at least make them start in a slower class till they have "experiance"...?

I agree juniors ought to move up. I don't think its about insurance because parents have to have consent forms on file with arma and us. They should have at least have a junior mod class where they can amp up there mowchines and make it just like an adult class. If a kid gets bored they loose interest and they're done I've see that happen in boy scouts to many times. Let'm run :3gears:

Even though I agree that the person you are talking about is able to control any mower out there, I totally disagree.  We have to have limits.   You let one that is capable move up and then the other dads start saying "my child can drive just as good as your child".  And, in most cases, this won't be true.  I do agree that we don't need to lose anyone, but, we need to find a better way to stop the boredom than by putting our children on faster, more dangerous machines. Just my opinion.
Lord, bless me with victory.  If not, bless me with the sportsmanship to accept defeat and the courage to say,  " I'll get em next time.... AMEN

Unfortunatly we can't just change the rule because one person might leave. I don't see George leaving this sport anytime soon...he has WAY to much fun doing what he does. Having class specifications by driver abilities would end up being too much of a pain. Favortism would eventually come out and this would discourage many people from coming into the sport.

I have to say that while Jake cannot move up the rule is about as fair as it can be. MAybe change the age limit a bit. MAYBE. But I am not gonna get into this. YEs Jake can drive anything he sits on. But thats Jake. Can't say that about them all. Wheather I get out or don't is not the issue. The sport lived before me and it will live after me. ME and Jake will continue doing something may even be mowers, becuase Like I said I am not giving anything away!!! So Please do not start anything on mine and Jakes accout. No one does anything forever.
AND YES I do enjoy this sport and I enjoy driving but not as much as I enjoy seeing Jake do what he loves. Yall enjoy these Holidays.

I agree that age should be a starting point, but there should provisions for the personal history of the driver. If driver shows, the ability and responsibity. He shoud be allowed to move up and not punished for acheiving the high level of skill. Also, why would you take the chance of losing these drivers, they are the future of the sport. It should be done on a case by case decision.

I also agree with this, heck Sprint cars dont have an age limit, theirs 13 year olds driving 800hp cars! :omg:  It should be based on the amount of skill you have, if you can drive safley and up to speed then you should be able to drive

A possible solution might be to do what they do in motorcycle road racing known as the "known fast guy" rule (KFG). If someone new shows up & they are able to run within X time of the others running in that class, they let them have their qualifying grid position instead of starting at the back. For mower racing, it could be used similarly. As an example: if the super mod class is averaging 12 seconds per lap & a youngster is able to run laps within 12.5 seconds, they would be allowed to run. I realize this doesn't take reaction time, experience etc into account but neither does the age requirement.

Age is the easiest way to enforce this I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Yeah definatly but you gotta remember those 800hp sprints have full roll cage and harness, this also goes the other way with karts and the younger generation

DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ALL ARE TALKING ABOUT. IN DEL. A MICRO SPRINT TRACK WICH RUNS EVERY SAT. EVENING, YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 12 YEARS OF AGE. 12-15 YEARS OF AGE THEY MUST RUN THE 125CC CLASS. AT 16 THEY CAN MOVE TO THE 250 CLASS. AT 18 THEY CAN MOVE TO 600 CLASS.

AT THIS POINT WHO ALLOWS KIDS UNDER 16 TO RACE AN 800HP CLASS????
IF THATS THE CASE STOP complaining ABOUT LAWN MOWER RACING AND GO RUN WHATEVER SPRINT CAR.

I FORGOT, THAT COST TO MUCH. :bash: SO WHY ARE LAWN MOWER RULES SO BAD? WE LET YOU START AT 10.

At the Affiliated club level and I believe the local chapter level the US has allowed the 15 yr olds to step up to a faster class based on driving ability. The insurance will cover it as it is karting insurance. We are doing it in our club and my daughter is moving up a year early. She will still have to run JP at the National level and she is fine with that. Easy change of engine and/or throttle cable.
