Fender Modifying
« on: December 22, 2010, 04:40:15 pm »
With the new USLMRA rule and the original ARMA rules Fender modifications are flying all over the place.
Here is how I did mine, if you have photos(Glenn) on how you did yours feel free to add them in!

Here is the original stock fender, you can see how far down the sides come. Any of you who have seen my mower know the seat was a few inches high.
I started out slicing the corners

i used the corners off a "donor" fender and cut wedges for the corners, bent the sides out almost flat and welded in the wedges. This mod will drop my seat height almost 3"!
Bert stole my cookies!!
I think he used them to bribe Ed into something naughty?

Do not have a pic of what I started with but here are some pictures of what I ended up with.

There is 1 cut up the side and 1 cut on the bottom of the fender to get it to bolt up like factory. Then a filler peice against the frame to fill the 1 1/2" gap that was left.

On the back side i added about 3 inches of the donor fender in to get the width. Weld very slowly and you will not have much filler.

This actually dropped the seat almost 4.5". Looks good in primer and ready for paint.

If you have any questions just ask.

Speaking only for ARMA, recess all you want, just don't let the bottom of the pan go below the top of the rear tires.

UNDER ARMA, YOU CAN TAKE THE SEAT PAN DOWN TO THE TOPS OF THE TIRES. KEEP IN MINDE THAT YOU NEED 1 " OF VERTICAL MATERIAL FROM THE TOP FENDER DOWN AND 1/2" OF TIRE TO FENDER CLEARANCE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Here is how I did some of my fender modifications. The seat pan is right at 1/4inch above the tires. Once the seat is on you wont even know that this has been done.

Here is the final outcome of the fender modifications. Need to do all the body work still though.

Hey Tommy. Did you put your fenders back to stock yet? The mods you did will not pass the USLMRA tech. Talked to Manny the other day and he said no mods to the seat pan area.

Kerry approved them on the forum. Dads seat won't even fit down there. We had to make spacers for it.

I talked to both Kerry and Manny about widening and modifying before I decided to go with ARMA only. Neither gave the same answer, and they had supposably "talked about it and agreed" to what one told me while the other told me the exact opposite. Now Im not trying to start a fight or get this deleted because it gives a "bad image or attitude" towards somebody, but merely stating the honest truth. Kerry said yes widening was ok, two days later manny said no we never discussed that, it always has been illegal and still is. Good luck getting a straight answer. I beleive there is more to your answer than how the rules are read...
