Which would enhance handling, longer or shorter wheelbase?

Both would.....

A longer wheelbase for longer tracks, and shorter wheelbase for winding roadcourse type tracks.

Keeping in mind, that this is in keeping stock mower wheelbase as a guide.

I like the longer wheel base regardless of track size.

Just how long is that, or is it a top secret secret. Most that I know of here run 42".

That would be a 42" {minimum} unaltered wheelbase...

You can get/use mowers that start with a longer WB in stock form...
