Help with front axle...
« on: November 08, 2006, 04:38:23 pm »
So i received my acme front axle for my mower build. I ordered it for bottom left steering. Kind of confused... It seems that when i set it up for bottom left , when the axle beam is staright the spindles are crooked  :(. Is this right? If anyone has used a acme axle can you show me some pics of how yours is mounted. thanks. Maybe it is liek that because it has  4 degree of camber and 15 degrees of positive castor also 15 degrees of akerman? I got that off the site where it told me the specs, i'm not very familiar with all that snazz.
Should it be mounted this way? This would be for right steering, but it looks more staright this way

Here it is setup for bottom left steering. It just doesnt look right to me

Here i show you what i mean by how the beam is straight but the spindle isn't.. should it be like this?

Just another pic showing the beam ..

If the beam is straight and the "top" of the spindle tilted back and you have clearance for tierod...then it is correct...

I think theres enough clearance for the tierod.. gotta check.. If there isn't then should i use it for right side steering? there is clearance there..

The way you have it mounted in the second picture is the correct way.  Clamp it in before permanantly installing to make sure there is clearance for the tie rod when turning the axle.  You may have to adjust the axle up or down or even flip the tie rod over.  I run Acme axles on both of my mowers for two seasons now and I have had no problems with them at all.  I do replace the bearings twice a year though to make sure they are tight.  Hope this helps.
