Vanguard twin sleeves centered?
« on: November 27, 2010, 09:25:27 pm »
What's the best way to tell if the sleeves are centered?  They're cast in so you can't see the top at all.  Can see the bottom a little but not all.  Am I just looking for the bore to be centered in the chamfer around the bottom of the sleeve?  How much is too much when boring a 35 to 38?

Thanks

You might have a bit of an idea measuring the sleeve thickness all the way around the bottom, if the factory bore seems to be offset to the side a lot it probably won't take the 38ci over bore, you can almost just look at it without measuring. Unfortunatly you can't tell if the sleeve is crooked top to bottom to good but if things check out underneath I would give it a shot.

I can't see the sleeve thickness around the bottom either, only the spots machined for clearance.  Assuming the chamfer aroung the bottom is centered, cylinder 1 is about .010" towards lifters and cylinder 2 is about .020" towards lifters.  Pretty rough measurements though.  I don't know if you can tell from pictures or not but here are some.

Measure the thinnest side of the cylinder the best you can and do the math and figure out what you'll have with the 38ci bore. If you end up with .040" of sleeve or so at the thinnest you'll be fine.
