Intek pistons in the Vannie
« on: November 16, 2010, 11:56:42 am »
I have got the block machined out for the Intek pistons and now I have a question. Can the Intek pistons be cut down .100 to use the long rods? I have a set of rods already and wondering if it can be done that way.

What about a short stroke 30ci crank, long rods and mill the deck a bit?

I got lots of 30 cranks. Tell me more. How much off the deck. Would this be a torque motor or a hp rev motor.

its a great combination to run....  it will be quick reving.... generally build less bottom end power... but i suppose your main goal is to from a low rpm to a higher rpm as fast as you can... that combo should do it for you...

Best thing to do would be to install a piston and long rod in your block with the 30ci crank, decide what thickness copper head gasket you are going to use and mill the deck or piston so you have .040" piston to head clearance.

Could the above mentioned ( 30 ci crank, milling the deck, and running the longer rods ) work on the 38ci block, and would it be benificial ?

That was my favourite combination, they rev quick, that's all that matters. There are rods and pistons out there that are made just for that combo. They have a better rod/stroke ratio, remember the 35-38ci vanny was an afterthought it started out as a 30ci engine. You just have to change your gear ratio accordingly.

Ryan who make te rod/piston combo for the short stroke 38ci bore, i have the plan of a short stroke BIG bore for a long time on my head, but the price of bore and resleeve is not wort it, i think i will go more simple with the 38ci bore

I've been thinking about this and trying to understand...  Yes, I'm sure this is a quick revving combination but, doesn't it take power to rev under load?  I know the ability to increase and decrease RPMs quickly is good hence the lightweight flywheels we use.  I guess it depends on the track and setup.  If your able to keep your RPMs up you don't need the low end power for acceleration but then why do you need a "snappy" motor?  Is it for playing the throttle through the turn?  If you're running a wider range of RPMs like say if your track has tight turns, wouldn't it be better to have the longer stroke?  I guess what i'm saying is, a longer stroke motor could be quicker revving than the short stroke, UNDER LOAD because it has the torque to get everything moving.  Just food for thought....

Can you post the source for the rods and pistons mentioned above for all to see?

The advantage is, as was mentioned.. it revs so high only dogs can hear it,

then the guy you're passing can't hear 'ya coming :)

PVT has them, and Ron's Rocket parts.

As far as the long stroke and short stroke goes, a well built vanny just needs to get to its rpm as quick as it can, or cycle fast. The improved rod angle and extra long rods really help the upper rpm cylinder filling, also they are never in the rpm range where you would need the longer stroke. They aren't a real big engine but you sure can take advantage of what its good for.
