Kohler M18 fuel pressure?
« on: November 14, 2010, 10:58:41 pm »
I have a Kohler magnum 18hp and I think the fuel pump is dead it will start and run fine as long as a keep spraying carb cleaner in the carb but as soon as I stop spraying the motor dies.  I'm wanting to run a electric fuel pump on it but I'm wondering if a standard automotive fuel pump would have to much pressure?  I would assume that since all automotive carbs take 3.5-5psi that a mower carb would be about the same right?

i would check the pump to make sure that is the problem, could be something in the carb as well!

well the fuel filter is staying less than half full it should be more than that?

also on an off note is their anything that can be done to this motor for a little more get up and go?  like is their room for improvement in the carb/intake area (besides making sure everything is working right)?

not uncommon to see a fuel filter half full or even less than that, pull the fuel line off the carb and crank the engine over a few turns, that will tell you if the pump is working, simple things like porting the intake and exhaust runners will improve performance without costing much!

Ok I will pull the fuel line and chrck it that way when I get home from work today. As far as porting the intake can these be ported too much?  I know with automotive motors you can open the ports to much and loose power is that the case with the small motors as well?

Not sure if this will help but I had a similar problem with my grass cutter and it turned out that the tube that runs from the valve cover to the fuel pump had a crack in it  might not help but just a thought
