piston to valve clearance
« on: November 08, 2010, 05:46:03 pm »
referring to the article below:

http://www.racingheadservice.com/Information/Technical/PistonToValveClearance.asp

Adjust the rocker arms to their suggested clearance. If the camshaft you are checking uses hydraulic lifters, you must temporarily use solid lifters in their place. Hydraulic lifters bleed down and will provide a false measurement. Once the hydraulic lifters are replaced with solid lifters, adjust the lash to “zero.” Be sure not to pre-load the valve spring. Be sure to reinstall the hydraulic lifters before starting the engine.

I'm not sure how to accomplish this. I believe that kohler offers solid lifters for the cv-14 anyone ever done this am I trying to figure something that "can't be done"? Do you need to have different push rods, adjustable rockers also, that seems like it wouldnt really be that helpful!! Or for that matter really tell you the clearance that you are gonna end up with.

Kohler solids have the adjustment on the lifter so rods and rockers stay the same...

Thanks Randy: Not too big of a deal I guess then.

So this is applicable to small engines as well? Is it how it should be done?

I just did it with my K341 build, but that has solids to start with. I was able to set a "0" lash and accuratly measure actual valve lift, and determine gasket thickness after I shaved the head

I don't know how you would do that with hydraulic lifters and no adjustment...

I was doing valve to head clearance, but thats cause the valves are in up side down from an OHV...

Solid lifter is an easy fix. The small block chevy solid lifter is a direct drop in. No mods required except for adjustable valve train. I think the adjustable kit midwest has now might work with the command single. Other wise a set of adjustable pushrods would work but there a pain to get setup correctly. Also if there is the room you can run small chevy roller rockers in a command but it requires some machiine work to make the clearance for the tie bar.

yes have been in contact with MWSC and they said that they are small block chevy roller rockers. Havent completely decided on solids or hydraulic. But need the solids to check the piston to valve clearance anyway. Since I have to get them for that may just have to go that route.

Midwest has a kit to make the stock rockers adjustable. Roller rockers aren't required.

Midwest has a kit to make the stock rockers adjustable. Roller rockers aren't required.

Adjustable Rocker Stud Kit for Kohler Command V-Twin engine. Kit
eliminates the need for adjustable push rods. Uses a proven design used in
V-8 racing engines, helps stabilize the pushrods and rockers by use of the
push rod guide plate. No machining required, drop in fi t. Perfect for stock
and stock altered V-twins. Made for use with stock length valves, works
great with our heavier single springs (CVS). Kit includes 4 rocker studs, 4
fulcrums, 4 poly nut adjusters and 2 pushrod guide plates. Prt No. RK4A

Dennis is this what you are referring to? Is this used with the Small block chevy non adjustable solid lifters? I guess the stock rocker arms hold up then.

Thanks

Tim
