Front spindles for brakes
« on: November 07, 2010, 01:16:09 pm »
Building the new front end and I plan on adding front brakes sometime. How much spindle do I need behind the hub?

I'm running the ec brake kit and I believe the mount is right at an inch wide. I can measure this and verify for you as we are on our way home from the ALL American

A lot of it depends on what kit you plan to use.

Glenn,
Your asking kind of a loaded question.

Lot's of variations depending on style of spindle you are using/building, what front brakes you plan to use ect.

Give me a call if you want and we can chat about your plans and the best way to do things for the axle you are building.

For MCP brakes you will need a spindle at LEAST 4.5" long with a wheel 6x6.5 and 2.5 :censored:. This is straight from Brad at MCP.
Hegar brakes Im not sure but you will have to have the spindles cut for a keyway.

I run HEGAR on all my machines and they work very well, they also tuck in the wheel nice too!

I would have to warn against cutting a key way on your spindle though, you can save the integrity of the spindle by welding a peice of 1/2" or 5/8" round stock in place on the front of your spindle to act as a stop.

Rob do you suppose cutting a slot only as long as the caliper needs is still taking away from the integrity of the spindle?

I cut a long keyway on my EC billet spindles so I could move the front wheels in or out. Never had a problem. Cut 3" if I remember right.

My thought is any material you remove does effect the integrity, I know there are many guys out there running with a keyway with no problems to date. I also know that there have been many spindles I have repaired for others at the track that failed at the keyway.
So for me it is adding un-needed risk when there is a way to get th same job done with out cutting the spindle.

Another option is to place a bead of weld where the key needs to be and then mill it into the shape of a key. I did this on my outlaw and had no problems all year.
