17 hp in JP
« on: November 03, 2010, 07:29:01 pm »
I have a couple 17 Tecumseh's and thinking of putting them in my Daughters JP for next year. At our club she is going to be running ungoverned and in the USLMRA she will run JP governed. Is this a good motor to try against the Briggs and Kaw's that I believe alot of people are going to switch to?

Has anyone run the 17 hp Enduro with good luck? Or should I look into something else for the JP?

The Tecumseh should hold up fine.  George has had good luck with them, I believe.  Does JP allow a 17 hp motor?  For some reason I thought they had lower hp ratings.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

2) ENGINE: Governed engines, 3650-RPM max. (No Load). Single-cylinder Over-
Head Valve Engines must be stock, complete, and not to exceed a factory rating of 17
horsepower.. After market consumable parts such as air filters and spark plugs may be
used as long as they are a direct stock replacement. Old style L-Head engines may still be
used.

2011 rules bumped it up to 17 hp

Is this US rules?  If so I might build one of these with a 31.

Yes. USLMRA rules. Same goes for IMOW. Gotta read them rules. I find when teching that alot of people miss some pretty basic things in rulebooks.

WOW !!!!!
Hard ta believe that they are running ohvs against the flatties!
well will not be long before the flatties will no longer be used in the Imow /j/p class!
it isnt even close between a 31/28 briggs OHV and a 28 flatty the tourqe/hp they put out!
was going ta build a j/p with flattie but not if i got ta run against OHV,s

well 2 of the top 3 at the 2010 all american were 12hp briggs flatheads running aginst ohvs, chassis and setup is alot more imprtant in the governed classes than in the ungoverned most of the time.

Chassis is very important. Last race we went to my daughter was running her flathead Kaw. governed at 4000 rpms against ungoverned Briggs 28 OHV and was beating them because her racer handles that much better. And that was on a way longer track then we are used to. I did open the pulley up to 7.6 to 1 to help. Surprised a bunch of the older guy's.

well ok lets say ya got a flattie and the guy next ta ya runing a 31 ohv(seen them rated from 16.5hp-19) ok in straights should be side by side(rpm limited) but ya come ta corner and tracks good anough neather 1 has ta back off witch 1 going ta stay at 3650 easier one at 12.5-13 hp or the one that crankin 19hp?s or lets say its a tight corner  or restart and ya got ta back off witch 1 getting back up ta 3650 quickest!!

My daughter's!!  LOL. It depends on alot of things. I would say the lightest machine would have an advantage over a little more cubes in that situation. At governed speeds I am not sure if there is much difference in flow from a flathead to a ohv. I really doubt there is much.

ok them if theres no differance why run a 17 hp tecunseth
you and i both know there is a differance!
like I said straights it shouldnt make any differance but corners, starts and anywere else were ya change speed (excel from lower rpm)them cubes will make a lot of differance!
small differance 1 10th of a second x 20 laps = 2 seconds 2-3 mower lenths!
listen I dont blame ya if its my chooce I,ll take a ohv any day
4 same reason ya run the Kaw flatties instead of briggs becauuse their generaly a little stronger engine than briggs!
i want ta see J/p get going at Ithaca but will tell ya we will do post inspection  just like pre inspection or all j/ps will be put in area (after teched in)were there will be  a eye on them so no changing of governors or pully changes!
